A. Cách sử dụng all và everybody/everyone trong tiếng Anh
Chúng ta thường không sử dụng all với nghĩa everybody/everyone:
Ví dụ:
- Everybody enjoyed the party. ('All enjoyed...')
(Mọi người đều đã hài lòng với bữa tiệc.)
Nhưng lưu ý rằng chúng ta nói all of us/you/them, không nói 'everybody of...':
- All of us enjoyed the party. (không nói 'everybody of us')
(Tất cả chúng tôi đều đã hài lòng với bữa tiệc.)
B. Cách sử dụng all và everything trong tiếng Anh
Đôi khi bạn có thể sử dụng all và everything với nghĩa như nhau:
Ví dụ:
- I'll do all I can to help. hoặc I'll do everything I can to help.
(Tôi sẽ làm tất cả những gì tôi có thể giúp.)
Bạn có thể nói all I can/ all you need ... nhưng all thường không đứng một mình:
- He thinks he knows everything. ('he knows all')
(Anh ta nghĩ anh ta biết hết mọi thứ.)
- Our holiday was a disaster. Everything went wrong. (không nói 'All went wrong')
(Kỳ nghỉ của chúng tôi thật khủng khiếp. Mọi thứ đều tồi tệ.)
Chúng ta sử dụng all trong thành ngữ all about:
- They told us all about their holiday.
(Họ kể với chúng tôi tất cả về kỳ nghỉ của họ.)
Ta cũng dùng all (không dùng 'everything') với nghĩa the only thing(s):
- All I've eaten today is a sandwich. (= the only thing I've eaten today)
(Tất cả những cái gì tôi đã ăn ngày hôm nay chỉ là một cái bánh sandwich.)
C. Chia động từ với Every / everybody / everything
Every / everybody / everything là những từ số ít, vì vậy ta chia động từ ở số ít.
Ví dụ:
- Every seat in the theatre was taken.
(Mọi chỗ ngồi trong rạp hát đều đã có người.)
- Everybody has arrived. (không nói 'have arrived')
(Mọi người đều đã tới.)
Nhưng chúng ta thường sử dụng they/them/their sau everybody/everyone:
Ví dụ:
- Everybody said they enjoyed themselves. (= he or she enjoyed himself or herself)
(Mọi đều đã nói họ hài lòng.)
D. So sánh all và whole trong tiếng Anh
Whole = hoàn toàn, toàn bộ. Chúng ta rất thường sử dụng whole với các danh từ số ít.
Ví dụ:
- Did you read the whole book?
(Anh đã đọc quyển sách này chưa? (= cả quyển sách không phải chỉ một phần))
- She has lived her whole life in Scotland.
(Cô ấy đã sống cả cuộc đời mình ở Scotland.)
Chúng ta thường sử dụng the/my/her... trước whole. Dưới đây là ví dụ để so sánh whole và all:
- the whole book / all the book: toàn bộ quyển sách
- her whole life / all her life: cả cuộc đời cô ấy
Bạn cũng có thể nói a whole...
- Jack was so hungry, he ate a whole packet of biscuits. (= complete packet)
(Jack đói quá, cậu ấy đã ăn cả gói bánh bích quy.)
Chúng ta thường không sử dụng whole với các danh từ không đếm được.
Ví dụ:
- I've spent all the money you gave me. (không nói 'the whole money')
(Tôi đã tiêu hết toàn bộ số tiền anh đưa cho tôi.)
E. Sử dụng Every/all/whole với các từ chỉ thời gian
Chúng ta thường sử dụng every để chỉ mức độ thường xuyên của sự việc. Vì vậy chúng ta nói every day / every Monday / every ten minutes / every three weeks ...
Ví dụ:
- When we were on holiday, we went to the beach every day. (không dùng 'all days')
(Khi chúng tôi đang trong kỳ nghỉ, chúng tôi đã đi ra bãi biển hàng ngày.)
- The bus service is very good. There's a bus every ten minutes.
(Dịch vụ xe buýt rất tốt. Cứ mười phút lại có một chuyến xe buýt.)
- Ann gets paid every four weeks.
(Ann lãnh lương bốn tuần một lần.)
All day / the whole day = suốt cả ngày, trọn một ngày
Ví dụ:
- We spent all day / the whole day on the beach.
(Chúng tôi đã chơi ở bãi biển suốt cả ngày.)
- He was very quiet. He didn't say a word all evening / the whole evening.
(Anh ấy rất ít nói. Anh ấy đã không nói lấy một lời suốt cả buổi chiều.)
Ghi chú: Lưu ý rằng ta nói all day (không nói 'all the day'), all week (không nói 'all the week') ...
Ví dụ so sánh all the time và every time:
- They never go out. They are at home all the time.
(Họ không bao giờ ra ngoài. Họ luôn luôn ở nhà. (= always — không nói 'every time') )
- Every time I see you, you look different.
(Mỗi lần tôi gặp anh, trông anh mỗi khác. (= each time, on every occasion).)
