Before you read (Trước khi bạn đọc)

Read the following saying and explain what it means. (Đọc câu nói sau và giải thích ý nghĩa.)

"Nếu bạn cho tôi một con cá,

Tôi sẽ có cá ăn hôm nay.

Nếu bạn dạy tôi cách câu cá,

Tôi sẽ có cá để ăn suốt đời."

Ý nghĩa:

- If someone gives you something to eat, you will not feel hungry but it won't last long. If someone gives you an opportunity to work or teaches you how to work, you will earn your own living for a long time.

hoặc

- This saying means that we should teach a person how to earn money or produce food rather than give them money or food in other word, we had better teach them a job than give them money.

Each nation has many people who voluntarily take care of others. For example, many high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places. Sometimes the students just visit them, play games with them or listen to their problems.

Other young volunteers work in the homes of sick or old people. They clean up their houses, do their shopping or mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers, there is a voluntary organization called Big Brothers. College students take these boys to baseball games and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.

Some high school students take part in helping disadvantaged or handicapped children. They give care and comfort to them and help them to overcome their difficulties. Young college and university students participate in helping the people who have suffered badly in wars or natural disasters. During summer vacations, they volunteer to work in remote or mountainous areas to provide education for children.

Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games. Some of these clubs organise short trips to the mountains, beaches or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to understand the problems of younger boys and girls.

Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.

Chẳng hạn như các học sinh phổ thông và sinh viên cao đẳng ở Mỹ thường làm tình nguyện viên nhiều giờ liền ở bệnh viện, trại trẻ mồ côi hay viện dưỡng lão. Họ đọc sách cho những người ở đấy nghe. Thỉnh thoảng họ đến thăm những người ấy, chơi các trò chơi và lắng nghe những vấn đề của họ.

Những tình nguyện viên trẻ khác thì đến làm việc ở nhà dành cho người bệnh hay người già. Họ lau chùi nhà cửa, đi mua sắm hay cắt cỏ. Với các em trại mồ côi cha thì có tổ chức tình nguyện gọi là "Big brothers - Người anh trai lớn". Các sinh viên đại học đưa các em trai đó đi chơi bóng chày và giúp chúng hiểu những vấn đề mà các bé trai thường học hỏi ở bố mình.

Một số học sinh trung học tham gia vào việc giúp các trẻ em khuyết tật hay cơ nhỡ. Họ chăm sóc và an ủi các em và giúp chúng vượt qua những khó khăn. Sinh viên cao đẳng và đại học thì tham gia vào việc giúp nạn nhân chiến tranh hay thiên tai. Suốt mùa nghỉ hè, họ tình nguyện làm việc ở những vùng hẻo lánh hay những vùng sâu vùng xa để đưa việc học hành đến cho bọn trẻ.

Mỗi thành phố đều có các câu lạc bộ nơi các em trai, gái đều có thể đến để chơi trò chơi. Một số các câu lạc bộ đó tổ chức những chuyến đi chơi đến miền núi, bãi biển hay các thắng cảnh khác. Hầu hết các lạc bộ này dùng các sinh viên làm tình nguyện vì họ còn đủ trẻ để hiểu được những vấn đề của các em trai và gái.

Những người tình nguyện tin rằng những người mang hạnh phúc đến cho người khác là những người hạnh phúc nhất thế giới.

Some are completely devoted to the cause, while others simply wish to do their bit where they can. In actual fact, many of the reasons for volunteering abroad are the same as those for volunteering at home but here there is the added bonus of getting to travel. However volunteering abroad is a much more meaningful experience, taking you further out of your comfort zone and offering far greater rewards.
