I come from a family of five people: my parents, my two younger brothers and I. My mother works as a nurse in a big hospital. She has to work long hours and once a week she has to work on a night shift. My father is a biologist. He works from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a lab, but sometimes when there is a project, he doesn’t come home until very late at night. Although my parents are very busy at work, they try to spend as much time with their children as possible. It is generally believed that "men build the house and women make it home", but in my family, both parents join hands to give us a nice house and a happy home.

My mother is a very caring woman. She takes the responsibility for running the household. She is always the first one to get up in the morning to make sure that we leave home for school having eaten breakfast and dressed in suitable clothes. In the afternoon, after hospital, she rushes to the market, then hurries home so that dinner is ready on the table by the time Dad gets home. Dad is always willing to give a hand with cleaning the house. Unlike most men, he enjoys cooking. Sometimes, at weekends, he cooks us some special dishes. His eel soup is the best soup I have ever eaten.

I am now in my final year at the secondary school, and in my attempt to win a place at university, I am under a lot of study pressure. However, being the eldest child and the only daughter in the family I try to help with the household chores. My main responsibility is to wash the dishes and take out the garbage. I also look after the boys, who are quite active and mischievous sometimes, but most of the time they are obedient and hard-working. They love joining my father in mending things around the house at weekends.

We are a very close-knit family and very supportive of one another. We often share our feelings, and whenever problems come up, we discuss them frankly and find solutions quickly. We always feel safe and secure in our family. It is a base from which we can go into the world with confidence.

Gia đình tôi có năm người: bố mẹ tôi, hai em trai và tôi. Mẹ tôi là y tá ở một bệnh viện lớn. Bà phải làm việc nhiều giờ, và phải trực đêm mỗi tuần một lần. Bố tôi là nhà sinh vật học. Ông làm việc ở phòng thí nghiệm mỗi ngày từ 8 giờ sáng đến 5 giờ chiều, nhưng thỉnh thoảng khi có đề án ông phải làm đến tận khuya mới về nhà. Mặc dù bố mẹ tôi rất bận rộn với công việc, họ đều cố gắng dành tối đa thời gian có thể cho chúng tôi. Người ta thường nói rằng "đàn ông xây nhà đàn bà xây tổ ấm", nhưng trong gia đình tôi, cả bố mẹ tôi cùng chung sức để cho chúng tôi một ngôi nhà đẹp và một gia đình hạnh phúc.

Mẹ tôi là một phụ nữ biết quan tâm tới người khác. Mẹ đảm nhận việc nội trợ. Mẹ luôn là người dậy sớm nhất nhà để lo cho chúng tôi bữa sáng và quần áo chỉnh tề để đi học. Vào buổi chiều, sau khi rời bệnh viện, mẹ vội đi chợ rồi hối hả về nhà, sao cho bữa tối sẵn sàng trên bàn ăn trước khi bố về. Bố luôn sẵn sàng giúp lau dọn nhà cửa. Không như những người đàn ông khác, bố tôi thích nấu nướng. Đôi khi vào cuối tuần bố nấu cho chúng tôi vài món đặc biệt. Món lẩu lươn do bố tôi nấu ngon hơn bất cứ món lẩu nào tôi đã từng ăn.

Hiện giờ tôi là học sinh phổ thông năm cuối, và với dự định đậu vào đại học, tôi chịu rất nhiều áp lực. Tuy vậy, là người chị cả cũng như là con gái duy nhất trong nhà, tôi luôn cố gắng giúp mẹ làm việc nhà. Công việc chính của tôi là rửa bát và đổ rác. Tôi cũng chăm sóc các em, bọn chúng đôi khi rất hiếu động và quậy phá, nhưng thường thì chúng rất ngoan và chăm làm. Chúng thích cùng bố tôi sửa chữa lặt vặt trong nhà vào cuối tuần.

Gia đình chúng tôi rất khăng khít và giúp đỡ lẫn nhau. Chúng tôi thường cùng chia sẻ buồn vui, và khi gặp rắc rối, chúng tôi cùng thẳng thắn trao đổi và nhanh chóng tìm ra giải pháp. Chúng tôi luôn thấy bình yên và an toàn trong gia đình mình. Đó là nền tảng giúp chúng tôi có thể tự tin bước vào đời.

=> They are very busy. They have to work long hours and sometimes they have to work at night.

2. How caring is the mother? (Người mẹ quan tâm chăm sóc gia đình như thế nào?)

=> She's always the first to get up in the morning to make sure her children can leave home for school with breakfast and in suitable clothes. And she always makes dinner ready before her husband gets home.

3. How do the father and the daughter share the household chores? (Người bố và cô con gái phụ giúp việc nhà ra sao?)

=> The father sometimes cooks some special dishes and mends things around the house at weekends. And the daughter helps with the household chores: washing up and taking out the garbage. She also takes care of her two younger brothers.

4. What is the daughter attempting to do after secondary school? (Cô con gái dự định làm gì sau khi học xong phổ thông?)

=> She attempts to win a seal in a university.

5. Why do the children feel they are safe and secure in their family? (Tại sao bọn trẻ cảm thấy bình yên và an toàn khi ở trong gia đình?)

=> Because they are a close-knit and supportive of one another, they often share their feelings and whenever problems come up, they discuss them frankly and quickly find solutions.

Work in groups. Compare the family described in the text with your own family. (Làm việc nhóm. So sánh gia đình được miêu tả trong đoạn văn với gia đình em.)

Gợi ý:

My family is smaller than the family in the text. My family has four members: my parents, my sister and me.

Unlike the family in the text, only my father goes to work; he's a teacher in a university in the city. My mother's a housewife. My sister is married and working in a hospital. She hasn't had a child yet. My sister's family lives in the same city as my family.

My mother is a devoted wife. She always takes good care of everybody in the family. Never does she get up after five a.m. to prepare breakfast for dad and me. My father is a great husband. He always keeps an good eye on the family. In his spare time, he gives a hand with household chores. He is my great support and guide in my study.

Like the family in the text, we are very closely-knit and supportive of one another. I feel happy because my parents are very caring. They spend as much time for the family as possible. At weekends, all the members of the family gather and have dinner together. We share our feelings, joys as well as sorrows, and support one another when any problems come up.
