II. READING

TASK 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B, or C to each of the questions.

Is the generation gap in America no longer a severe problem as it used to be? Dating back to the 1960s when teenagers tended to lash out the values and goals of their parents as well as rebel against the authority figures, the incendiary conflicts between older and younger generations increased sharply. It’s because teenagers' world wasn’t any longer limited in a narrow society that wasn’t mobile, and instead of going to church every weekend, they were exposed to various forms of social media like television and radios. They got access to huge sources of new ideas, which liberated them from old-fashioned and boring lifestyles whereas many older people were conservative and didn’t accept differences disturbing their normal life. Over time, however, the tension between generations has been alleviated due to the improved mutual understanding of baby boomers, Millennials and even Zillennials in many fields of life. According to recent research, the largest generational discrepancies between young and old in the United States are the use of technology and taste in music. Nevertheless, in terms of technological use, many older people gradually learn how to use a laptop or smartphone to surf the Internet from their children and especially their grandchildren due to their recognition of huge technological benefits. Regarding the musical differences, unlike in the past, older generations nowadays appear to give fewer critical remarks on what type of music teens should listen to and begin to accept the variety of music tastes when living under the same roofs.

A. The Internet and television.

B. The Internet and radios.

4. Why did the older generation refuse to access new things?

A. Because they thought those things were tedious.

B. Because they loved to go to church every weekend.

C. Because they didn’t want to change their normal life.

D. Because they weren’t able to learn technological devices.

5. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Nowadays there is no longer a generation gap.

Read the passage and circle the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions.

Apart from regular exercise, the food we put in our bodies can have both instant and life-long effects on our health, and too much of everything is also bad. Leftover food may create stress because it can hurt our stomach badly. Too much salt, sugar, fat and pepper also makes us less calm. Overconsumption of some kinds of foods, such as onion, garlic, tea, coffee, tobacco, soda, alcohol, chocolate, sour apples, pickles and refined sugars encourages aggression, and consumers tend to have more worries than happiness. More importantly, the relationship between food and stress is about what or how much we eat and how the food is eaten. For example, stress is probably created when we eat food in a great hurry or when we are angry. The way the food is served is also a matter of importance. Not only does the presentation of the dish play a role but the love and affection with which the food is provided are also essential. It is considered a bad habit to give too many negative comments on the food that we are eating. It is better not to eat the dish we do not like than look for something wrong in it.

Bear in mind that we should maintain regular eating habits. Workaholics who do not arrange a time to eat food at proper meal time may suffer from serious stomachache. One must try to enjoy their food, so frequently eating business lunches or dinners is not a really good idea. Every bite of food should be enjoyed with relaxation. Food and discussions should not be mixed. There are accepted ways to charge our daily food. Prayer could be the best method for energizing the food, and it usually has a useful effect.

May 2, 2000 saw a great improvement in the accuracy of GPS. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers were instantly upgraded. An announcement from the White House meant everyone’s ability to pinpoint their location or their item’s location. On May 3, a GPS enthusiast named Dave Ulmer tested this accuracy by hiding a navigational target in the woods. He placed a black bucket containing a logbook, a pencil, videos, books, software and a slingshot in the woods near Beavercreek, Oregon near Portland. Next, he shared the waypoint with the online community. Within three days, two different people used their own GPS receivers to find the container and wrote about their experiences. The original idea was simple: hide a container and note the coordinates with a GPS unit. The rules for participants include ‘Take some, leave some’. Various ideas were suggested in place of ‘stash’ before ‘geocaching’ was settled on.
