The concept of parental authority has changed. Today, no parent can take their children’s respect for granted: authority has to be earned. Several studies have shown the following problems.

Trust: A lot of young people say their parents read all their emails, and enter their rooms without knocking. All of these actions demonstrate lack of respect. Consequently, these teenagers have little respect for their parents.

Communication: Hardly any teens discuss their problems with their parents. That’s because very few teens feel their parents really listen to them. Instead, most parents tend to fire off an immediate response to their kids’ first sentence.

Freedom: Interestingly, most rebels come from very authoritarian homes where kids have very little freedom. Teens need fewer rules but they have to be clear and unchangeable. Also, if the mother and father don’t agree about discipline, teens have less respect for both parents. They also need a lot of effort and a little freedom to make their own decisions. None of them enjoys just listening to adults.

Role models: Teens don’t have much respect for their parents if neither of them actually does things that they expect their children to do. Like everybody, teens appreciate people who practise what they preach.

The nuclear family, (26)of a mother, father and their children may be (27)an American ideal than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional family was always varied than we had been led (28), reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among among different American groups, but today (29)is even more obvious.

The most recent government statistics reveal that only  about one third of all current American families fit the traditional mold of two parents and their children, and (30)third consists of married couples who either have (31)children  or have none still living at home. Of the final one third, about 20 percent of the total (32)of American household are single people, usually women over sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total , consists of unmarried people who (33)to live together, and the rest, about 7 % are (34)parents, with at least one child.

There are several reasons for the growing number of the single-parent households. First, the number of births to unmarried women has increased dramatically. In addition, a substantial number of adults become single parents (35)of divorce. Finally, a small percentage of deaths result in single-parents families. Today, these varied family types are typical and, therefore, normal.

III. READING

Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.

Approximately one in two thousand people in Viet Nam has a significant hearing loss. Students who have been deafened in early childhood can be very different to students who have lost hearing later in life in terms of educational disadvantage. For example, their range of vocabulary may be limited, which in turn may affect their level of English literacy.

Deaf and hard of hearing students can sometimes prefer visual learning strategies. This can be a challenge in an environment where much essential information is delivered exclusively by word of mouth.

Students with a hearing loss may need to use assistive technology to participate in class. This assistive technology can be the laptop where software such as Skype can be used to deliver interpreters or captioning. For some it will be in the form of listening devices. For others, it will be a combination of technology that includes both listening devices and computer based software.

The impact of hearing loss can cause delays in receiving learning material. Students who need information transcribed from tape must sometimes wait for a significant period of time for this to happen. This needs to be considered in terms of developing suitable timelines for the completion of work for each student.

Students with hearing loss may appear isolated in the learning environment. The possibility for social contact and interaction with other students is often limited, and this isolation or separateness may have an impact on learning. Participation and interaction in tutorials may be limited. Students who cannot hear the flow and nuances of rapid verbal exchange will be at a disadvantage.

Another difference is the use of technology. Young teachers tend to use more digital devices is class for their lessons that has a good (33)on the students. An old teacher has (34)- frequent use of electronic devices that makes lessons boring, which is not enjoyed by the students and it creates a gap between them.

Becoming Independent

The step into adult life can be incredibly exciting, but it also brings with it a whole range of challenges. The (31) and independence from family can feel great, but it can also be really hard. There are lots of decisions to make as you figure out what you want to do with your life.

Study… work… money… relationships… partying. There are lots of (32) and decisions to be made. You may be thinking about leaving home, your career or independent life. Maybe you feel pressure to ‘make something of yourself’ or to be a success. This pressure might be from other people or from within yourself.

Most people will feel some (33) or worry about these things; for others, these added challenges can make life quite hard and contribute to depression or anxiety.

If you can’t find work or have lost your job or left education early, it brings all sorts of challenges. The most obvious challenge is having no money. You may feel a sense of failure that can knock your (34) . These changes may also mean you’re not in regular contact with other people any more.

It’s not just unemployment which can contribute to depression. Lack of job (35) can also play a part. As you’re figuring out what you want to do work wise, or struggling with your work and social life, you might find that you’re not actually enjoying the job you chose.

Read the article and answer the questions that follow.

Is There Really a Generation Gap?

According to the results of a survey in USA WEEKEND Magazine, there isn’t really a generation gap. The magazine’s “Teens & Parents” survey shows that today’s generation of young people generally get along well with their parents and appreciate the way they’re being raised. Most feel that their parents understand them, and they believe their parents consider family as the No. 1 priority in their lives. Although more than a third of teens have something in their rooms they would like to keep secret from their parents, it is usually nothing more harmful than a diary or a CD.

Such results may seem surprising in the context of the violent events that people hear about in the media. Maybe because of the things they hear, parents worry that their own kids might get out of control once they reach the teenage years. However, the facts in the survey should make us feel better. The survey shows us that today’s teens are loving and sensible. They are certainly happier than the angry people in the teenage stereotypes we all know about. True, some teenagers are very angry, and we need to recognize their needs, but the great majority of teens are not like that at all.

In contrast to some stereotypes, most teens believe they must be understanding about differences among individuals. Many of them volunteer for community service with disadvantaged people. When they talk about themselves, their friends and their families, they sound positive and proud. Generally, these are very nice kids.

Is this spirit of harmony a change from the past? Only a generation ago, parent-child relations were described as the “generation gap”. Yet even then, things were not so bad. Most kids in the 1960s and 1970s shared their parents’ basic values.

Perhaps, however, it is true that American families are growing closer at the beginning of this new millennium. Perhaps there is less to fight about, and the dangers of drug abuse and other unacceptable behavior are now well known. Perhaps, compared to the impersonal world outside the home, a young person’s family is like a friendly shelter, not a prison. And perhaps parents are acting more like parents than they did 20 or 30 years ago.

Question 36. According the first paragraph, what did the survey find out about teenagers?

A. They get along well with their parents.

B. They appreciate good CDs.

C. They keep secrets from their parents.

D. They stay in their rooms.

Question 37. According to paragraph two, parents hear things that make them worry about their own kids. What kind of things do they hear?

A. stories on the radio

B. the violent events in the media

C. funny films on TV

D. their teachers’ comments at school

Question 38. What is the stereotype referred to in paragraph 2?

A. Teens are people who recognize their needs.

B. Teens are loving and sensible.

C. Teens are much happier than we think.

D. Teens are angry people.

Question 39. What is the main subject of paragraph three?

A. Differences between teens.

B. Stereotypes about teens.

C. The positive attitude of teens to others.

D. Volunteering for disadvantaged people.

Question 40. In what way, according to the writer, are parents today different from they were a generation ago?

A. there is more to fight about

B. the dangers of drug abuse are still unknown

C. other unacceptable behaviors are now well known

D. a young person’s family is like a prison

V.  LISTENING

Listen a small talk about volunteerism and fill in each blank with ONE word.

Being a (41)is one of the best things you can do with your life. It’s a (42)way to help other people. It’s also very (43)to know that you are not wasting your time and are helping people who need help. Many of us could and should be out there doing voluntary (44)of some kind. So many volunteer (45)need extra hands. It really is easy. Just pick up the phone and offer your (46). I think too many of us settle into a lazy (47). We just want to come home and watch TV. Life is much more (48)when you’re a volunteer. I’ve found it really (49)your eyes to how some people live. It’s sometimes sad to see how the (50)lets people down, but at least I’m doing my bit.
