Halloween is one of the most famous holidays in the U.S, and it is on October 31. People carve pumpkins and make funny faces on them. These are called “Jack-O-Lantern”. On October 31, children wear a special costume such a witch, ghost, or clown. They go to many houses and they knock on the door saying, “Trick or Treat!” It means that of people don’t give them a treat, they will play some kind of trick on the household. So, usually people give candy to them.
I carved my first Halloween pumpkin at my Friendship Family’s house. First, I cut open the top of the pumpkin and pulled the seeds out. It was not good for me because it was sticky and smelled bad. I had never carved a pumpkin, so it was interesting for me. Next, I carved the eyes and the mouth. I wanted to make a face like a pirate. When I finished making the face, I put a candle inside. It was very beautiful, so I was happy.
I had a good experience because I learned one new idea about American culture by taking part in it. I think Halloween is an interesting American holiday which involves all family members and neighbors too!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word and phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 31 to 35.
WAYS OF SOCIALIZING
To attract someone’s attention so that we (31)…….. speak to that person, we can use either verbal or non-verbal forms of communication. Let us look at non-verbal communication in English. Probably the (32)…….. common way of attracting someone’s attention is by waving. For example, if we are at a noisy party and see a friend come in the door about 20 metres away, we might raise our hand and wave to her as a signal that we see her.
But how hard can we wave in a situation like this? Suppose you are (33)… …. the airport, and you see your brother get off the plane and begin walking toward you. If you are excited, you might jump up and down and wave as hard as you can …(34)…… his attention. This is the instance where big, obvious non-verbal signals are appropriate.
There are, however, some social situations where smaller non-verbal signals are more appropriate. In a restaurant, for example, if we want to attract the (35)………….of our waiter, we have several choices. We can wait until he passes near us, catch his eye, and nod slightly to let him know we would like him (36)….…… to our table. Or we can raise our hand slightly to show that we need assistance. We do not whistle or clap our hands to get the person’s attention. That is considered impolite and even rude.
In most social situations where some informality ……… allowed, a brief raise of the hand and a small wave is fine. For instance, if you are walking across the schoolyard and see your teacher approaching you, a small friendly wave to attract his or her attention is appropriate.
Once you’ve got your friend’s attention, you shouldn’t point at the person or thing you want her to look at. A slight nod will do. Pointing at someone is usually (35)………….. rude. Of course, there are times when pointing is (39)……….. acceptable, such as when a teacher wants to get someone’s attention in class. The teacher often points (40)……. the student and says, “David, would you read the next sentence, please?” Pointing here is not impolite; it’s simply a way to get someone’s attention.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the numbered blanks from 36 to 42.
When people plan to marry, they expect to find in their partner not only a lover but a friend also. They find a person with whom they can share their opinions, their emotions, thoughts and fears. In marriage we are looking for a partner who will be able to understand our values, our likes and dislikes.
If a man and a woman are born and raised in the same country, most likely they are familiar with the same songs, movies, jokes, books and life in general. They basically have the same roots. In the case of a western man and foreign woman family everything is more complicated and requires much more patience and understanding from both spouses. On one hand each of the partners has an opportunity to learn a great deal about the other's country, culture, traditions and life styles which can be very interesting. On the other hand it can be very disappointing if there is the inability to understand your partner's excitements and frustrations. For example, you are watching the television and suddenly you see a famous actor or singer, or other type of an artist whose name you have grown up with. Maybe this artist was an idol for your parents and the music of this artist was often played in your house when you were a child. Unfortunately you realize that your wife is unable to understand your feelings because she has no idea who this artist is. Her eyes are absolutely empty because she has never even heard the song before. You feel rather disappointed! Remember that your wife has the same situation with you. You do not know her country's songs, her country's famous actors, her books. She has her own memories and in actuality, for her, everything is much more difficult than it is for you. At least, you live in your own country where everybody can understand you. She lives in completely strange surroundings, where she has nobody to share her feelings with, except you.
Do some research and learn about your wife's country, culture and lifestyles. Talk with her, ask her questions, get to know what songs she likes, what movies and books are of interest to her. The Internet will give you a great opportunity to find anything! Tell her about your country's culture, let her listen to the music that you like, rent a movie for her that left you with great impression. Let her understand you better through the things that you like. Patience and time will help you to fight cultural differences.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the numbered blanks from 43 to 50.
The principle of use and disuse states that those parts of organisms’ bodies that are used grown larger. Those parts that are not tend to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular muscles, they grow. Those that are never used diminish. By examining a man's body, we can tell which muscles he uses and which he doesn't. We may even be able to guess his profession or his reaction. Enthusiasts of the "body- building" cult make use of the principle of use and disuse to "build" their bodies, almost like a piece of sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar minority culture. Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot and you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at their hands alone. The farmer's hands are horny, hardened by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft.
The principle of use and disuse enables animals to become better at the job of surviving in their world, progressively better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips them better to survive in the particular local conditions.
Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown pigment melanin which is synthesized under the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the underlying tissues from the harmful effects of further sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit from what little sun there is. This can be represented as an instance of the principle of use and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades to white when it is not.
Question 46:What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. How the principles of use and disuse change people's concepts of themselves.

C. The way in which people change themselves to conform to fashion.
D. The effects of the sun on the principle of use and disuse.

Read the passage below and choose one correct answer for each question from question 39 to 45:
Insects' lives are very short and they have many enemies, but they must survive long enough to breed and perpetuate their kind. The less insect-like they look, the better their chance of survival. To look "inedible" by resembling or imitating plants is a deception widely practiced by insects. Mammals rarely use this type of camouflage, but many fish and invertebrates do.
The stick caterpillar is well named. It is hardly distinguishable from a brown or green twig. This caterpillar is quite common and can be found almost anywhere in North America. It is also called "measuring worm" or "inchworm." It walks by arching its body, than stretching out and grasping the branch with its front feet then looping its body again to bring the hind feet forward. When danger threatens, the stick caterpillar stretches its body away from the branch at an angle and remains rigid and still, like a twig, until the danger has passed.
Walking sticks, or stick insects, do not have to assume a rigid, twig-like pose to find protection; they look like inedible twigs in any position. There are many kinds of walking sticks, ranging in size form the few inches of the North American variety to some tropical species that may be over a foot long. When at rest their front legs are stretched out. heightening their camouflage. Some of the tropical species are adorned with spines or ridges. imitating the thorny bushes or trees in which they live.
Leaves also seem to be a favorite object for insects to imitate. Many butterflies can suddenly disappear from view by folding their wings and sitting quietly among the foliage that they resemble.
Câu 39: What is the main subject of the passage?
A. Caterpillars that live in trees B. How some insects camouflage themselves
C. The feeding habits of insects D. Insects that are threatened with extinction
Câu 40: In lines I and 4, the word "enemies" refers to
A. extreme weather conditions B. other creatures competing for space
C. creatures that eat insects D. inedible insects
Câu 41: According to the passage, how does the stick caterpillar make itself look like a twig?
A. By changing the color of its skin B. By holding its body stiff and motionless
C. By laying its body flat against a branch D. By looping itself around a stick
Câu 42: Which of the following is true of stick insects?
A. They resemble their surroundings all the time.
B. They change color to make themselves in visible.
C. They are camouflaged only when walking.
D. They make themselves look like other insects.
Câu 43: Which of the following are NOT mentioned in the passage as objects that are imitated as a means of protection?
A. Leaves B. Thorns C. Sticks D. Flowers
Câu 44: In which paragraph does the author describe the way in which stick caterpillars move?
A. Paragraph two B. Paragraph three C. Paragraph four D. Paragraph one
Câu 45: Where in the passage does the author describe the habitat of tropical stick insects?

They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. A striking feature of Viet Nam’s remarkable progress over the last few decades is the rapid pace of urbanisation. In 1986, there were fewer than there are 30 million urban residents. Today there are 30 million. Cities have become strong growth forces, with urban areas growing twice as fast as the national average rate, and contributing over half of the country’s gross domestic product.
Viet Nam needs to reshape its urbanization process to create more efficient cities - cities that have sufficient population densities are well connected internally and regionally, and well managed. In addition, in line with Viet Nam's strong preference for social equity, cities will need to ensure inclusion of all residents, with no groups or area “left behind."
Meanwhile, rural residents increasingly lag behind their urban counterparts in income and access to services, leading many to migrate to cities. Migration presents challenges for urban management but also opportunities to enhance labor mobility. Fortunately, these trends can be reversed.
For example, four years ago, Alley 76 in Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City was only narrow enough for one motorbike to get through. Store owner Bui Thi Mai knows how a clean and efficient city can make or break a business. When it rained, the alley was often flooded with floating garbage and mosquitoes. Crime was increasing. Today, after undergoing major upgrading under an urban renewal project, the street is cleaner, safer and trucks carry goods to her door. Her family income has soared and her life has been completely changed.

C. made rural areas develop along with urban ones
D. made urban areas develop faster than the average

Everybody loves the giant panda. That was clear from the enthusiastic welcome New Yorkers gave to Ling Ling and Yong Yong when they arrive at the Bronx Zoo in May. The cuddy black-and white pair were on loan for six months from China’s Beijing Zoo, and it was estimated that more than 1 million people visited them in New York before they left for a zoo in Tampa, Florida in early November.
The giant panda, unfortunately, is an endangered species. Only about 700 are left in the wild, most of them living on reserves in China’s Sichuan Province. Despite conservation efforts on the part of the Chinese government and scientists worldwide, the population continues to decline as human beings cut down bamboo, the panda’s primary food.
Can the panda be saved? Of course. All it needs is bamboo and peace. Every panda population should have at least two bamboo species available to lessen the impact of a die-off. Bamboo at low elevations must be preserved or replanted. Existing reserves need to be expanded and new reserves created. Poaching must be controlled. Zoos must improve captive breeding to provide more pandas for their original home.
China’s Ministry of Forestry and the World Wildlife Fund are continuing their collaborative effort on the panda’s behalf, guided by the spirit of their joint agreement that reads: “The giant panda is not only the precious property of the Chinese people, but also a precious natural heritage of concern to people all over the world. ”
41. China’s Beijing Zoo borrowed two pandas from Bronx Zoo.
42. Pandas are in danger because of food shortage.
43. The Chinese government is to blame for the extinction of pandas.
44. Zoos are useful in breeding more pandas to send back to the wild.
45. The panda is a natural heritage of China and the whole world.

Part 2: Read the passage and answer the questions:
Alice Walker has written book of poetry and short stories, a biography, and several novels. She is probably best known for her novel The Color Purple, published in 1982. The book vividly narrates the richness and complexity of black people – especially black women – in Georgia in the 1920s and 1930s. Although the novel came under bitter attack by certain critics and readers, it was applauded by others and won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It became a bestseller, selling over 4 million copies, and it was made into a successful film by noted director Steven Spielberg. The novel reveals horror, drudgery, and joy of black life in rural Georgia. It gets much of its special flavor from its use of the words, rhythm, and grammar of Black English and from its epistolary style. Telling a story through letters was a narrative structure commonly used by eighteen-century novelists, but it is not often used in contemporary fiction. Unlike most epistolary novels, which have the effect of distancing the reader from the events described by the letter writer, The Colour Purple used the letter form to draw the reader into absolute intimacy with the poor, uneducated, but wonderfully observant Celia, like William Faulkner' character Dilsey, does not simply survive, but prevails.
