In many developed nations, consumerism is not only about buying the everyday things we need to survive but is also seen as a form of entertainment. This essay will argue that this is a very negative development because of the detrimental effect marketing and advertising has on people and the fact that it is a very unproductive hobby.

The main reason people buy luxury items is because of the influence multinationals’ marketing campaigns have on them. We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us that if we buy a certain product, we will be happier, more beautiful or more complete. In many ways, these companies trick us into buying their products, when all we need to be happy are much simpler items. For example, fashion chains like Chanel and Prada tell people that they are only good enough if they wear nice clothes and use glamorous models to make people feel unsatisfied with their appearance.

Shopping for goods you don’t really need is also not the most productive thing you can do with your time. Not only is it a huge waste of money; it does nothing to develop a person either physically or intellectually. If we compare this activity with other popular pastimes like sport, reading or even watching movies, we can see how unfulfilling shopping really is. For instance, most of my friends who spend their weekends shopping have nothing else to talk about, other than their purchases, whereas my friends who use their time more wisely are often much more interesting to talk to.

In conclusion, people should only shop for the necessities and not for pleasure because they are being manipulated by transnational companies and there are also much more constructive ways for people to spend their free time.

For inhabitants of the developed economies, shopping is becoming more of a past time - rather than spending money on buying required commodities - with they often entertain themselves. This trend fetches some accolades and brickbats.

Developed countries have influential economies which rely on the spending by consumers. The trend of using shopping as a way to entertain is fueling the consumerist society, which in turn is generating economic activity; assisting in consuming the products being manufactured by the factories; and the services being offered by services establishments. This in turn is generating employment - the workers being employed by the factories and service establishments - at the local and global level.

On top of that, it is firmly believed that the inclination of inhabitants to go on shopping trips to keep themselves entertained is also preventing many evils and stressful situations. Most of the population of affluent countries spends very less time at work – generally around 35 to 40 hours per week - which leaves them with an abundance of free time which if not consumed in some productive work, is used in activities that often lead to self-harm – sedentary lifestyle, suicides, addiction to drugs and alcohol - or certain crimes which can jeopardize public safety – like murder and burglary.

Quite contrary to the popular beliefs and theories, entertaining oneself with shopping has many drawbacks. Fostering habit of wasteful expenditure and extravagancy can has a long-lasting adverse impact on the people as involving oneself in wasteful expenditure would surely jeopardize finances in future.

Shopping has now become a means of recreation, rather than being a source of acquiring the necessary commodities, in most of the advanced nations of the globe. I consider this a negative development and assert that it is imperative to discourage such non-essential shopping norms.

It goes without saying that in today’s material world, rarely do we buy only what we need. We no longer shop for the basics and go on buying unnecessary items for the sake of flaunting them to the consumerist society. The popularity of luxury convenience foods and sales at designer clothing outlets, for example, testifies to them. Hence, it is clear that shopping is now mostly done out of greed rather than for need.

In addition, traditional shops have been transformed into enormous shopping malls. Not only do they provide the essentials, but also have play areas for children and movie theatres for adults, therefore fulfilling the purpose of leisure. To illustrate, these malls are densely populated on Sundays in particular, showing how ingrained the association between shopping and leisure has become in today’s consumerist society. Thus, it is evident that we no longer shop because we have to, we do it because we want to.

In conclusion, it would not be wrong to say that in the recent times, shopping has merely become a source of entertainment. In my belief, this trend should be immensely deterred. It is crucial to reiterate that there is a thin line between need and greed, and the sole purpose of shopping should only be to satisfy the fundamental needs rather than being means of amusement.

Shopping, by its definition, is an activity through which people visit shops and markets and purchase things and commodities they need. However, this is not always the truth and the terms like ‘hobby shopping’ and ‘shopaholic’ refer the excessive passions and inclination people have towards shopping and purchasing things that they rarely need. In my opinion, shopping habit that allure people to purchase things which they do not need is a bad habit and has more negative aspects.

To begin with, we live in a materialistic world and people take pride on the earthly possessions they have. Our moral should be in helping people who are in need, not amassing our own fortune. The excessive shopping habit thus diminishes the true humanity and nurture a hypocrite mentality among people. It is a well-known fact that if someone starts purchasing things that he does not need at all, someday he will not be able to purchase things that he really needs.

Second, shopping is an activity that without any doubt gives a shopper a sense of satisfaction and pleasure. However, if someone starts shopping too much, he is bound to be restricted to this activity only while his time for socialising and outdoor activities would be consumed by the time he will spend for shopping. Purchasing things that we do not need is a habit that makes us greedy and imprudent. If we allow ourselves to practice this, we will surely deviate from other morality and quality of life.

Finally, pleasure shopping supporters are contented about the fact that they are doing something that makes them happy, and they think it is a good way to purchase for the future and who knows when we need what! However, they do not realise that they are spending money and time on something that has no real value. Shopping should be for fulfilling our necessity, not for our personal pleasure.

In conclusion, shopping as an entertainment is not a good trend in our personal and social life. We should invest our time and money on more productive activities to make the world even better.
