In the past years, individuals shifted their location of shopping from small retail stores to shopping centres, resulting in the shutdown of many local shops. In my opinion, this trend is negatively affecting the economy in various ways.

To begin with, small shops closing down have a big influence on the unemployment rates of a country. In other words, when retail stores are unable to compete with big malls for not having enough resources, they are obliged to dismiss all their employees. As a result, job opportunities are harder to find, and competition in the work field is higher, especially for individuals who are above years old. For example, newly graduates have a better chance to find a new job vacancy because companies prefer to have youth in their teams due to their adaptability skills, leaving the individuals within the age range above 40 unemployed.

Secondly, large centres can control the market price wise when there is no more competition. To put it differently, it is commonly known that owning a mall or a shop within a centre can lead to high expenses. Consequently, when competition gets lower large shops increase the prices of their goods in order to start gaining profits. For instance, business researchers showed that a very common strategy new businesses use is to cut their profits to Zero if necessary to attract new customers where they wait for their competitors to close to start increasing the prices gradually.

In conclusion, large centres taking over the market, forcing retailers to close their businesses affect the economy in both increases of prices and unemployment rates.

The customer is a king. The recent transition of small outlets from the streets to a store in a mall has impacted the lives of the smaller vendors. They belong to an unorganized sector of the economy and constitute a major part.

Firstly, in the older days, when everyone was familiar with the street shops they were comfortable as well. The modern trade methodology shifted more to the shopping malls and online portals; the impact on micro industries and vendors is huge. Since the capital available with these shopkeepers is low, they could not afford the advanced equipment that could help their business grow. As a result, when they could not cope with products and technologies they rapidly vanished from the market. However, there are some examples of businessmen who translated their small business to macro level, for instance, DMART in India.

On the whole, these examples are few in number and could not be used as a justification.

Secondly, the malls have huge spaces where you could get almost all items under one roof. This is another reason why local outlets get affected. For example, one has to go in different directions and travel some miles to do grocery shopping and some clothes to wear. Consequently, they have become an occasional place to visit, when a buyer is in urgent need of an item. In addition, they also get affected by the unavailability of parking spaces in the city. Due to these numerous circumstances, they often shut down in a short span of time since they opened.

To conclude, it is worth considering the adverse effects on this class of business. Ultimately, they are pushed below the poverty line and the liability on the government has surged.

Decades with the high dependence of big department stores and malls by the customer results in shut down of many small markets. I think this approach has both pros and cons which I am inclined to articulate in the next paragraphs.

To commence with, purchasing items from huge brands or stores has enormous benefits. Firstly, buying from such markets provides pupils with comfort and convenience as they are easily able to receive all types of products in one shopping centre. To illustrate, items related to groceries, clothes, gadgets and cosmetics are available on a single floor thus saving time and effort while buying. Secondly, doing transactions from the shopping malls and departmental shops develops the status of the individuals by receiving goods or services of the branded quality. For example, purchasing things from showrooms such as Amazon, Nike, and CK in malls gives the consumer   a status which shows the services they avail would be unique, different and better in quality. Therefore, that policy brings positive development by eventually distributing tremendous facilities and status symbols in one roof.

However, despite its interesting advantages that approach might not be free from drawbacks. Small businesses were wiped out owing to such advancements which further created big problems or issues, related to unemployment among individuals and the low level of income in society. In other words, many businesses will lose their jobs or might not be able to earn enough money for their livelihood while ultimately lowering the flow of funds in society. For instance, several shops in the Anandpur sahib had closed due to the construction of a shopping complex named the City plus.

To conclude, although with the growth of large department markets have led to many changes like the availability of every item in one floor, issues like employment loss and low distribution in the market might arise which ultimately results in the closing of little stores.

It is believed that people have increased their reliance on shopping complexes and malls, which has resulted in the closure of the street shops. I contend that it could have both negative and positive effects as people would get better goods and services in big shopping centres while the over-dependence on these places has made people forget about their culture.

People, nowadays, are more inclined towards those products that speak quality and prefer to buy goods with unlimited choice from renowned brands namely Adidas, Victoria secret, Zara. Moreover, the facilities which are offered to them at shopping malls like better infrastructure, air conditioning and refreshments are incomparable to the filthy street shops. For example, recently Suvidha, a shopping complex opened in my hometown, and it has become a shopping hub for locals owing to better amenities and high-quality products than the small shops. Therefore, it is considered a positive development because of the luxurious amenities that are being rendered by these shopping malls.

However, over reliance of people on the malls for shopping would make the popularity of local street shops suffer and this also would influence people to follow the culture of other countries over their oriental. For example, Khadi clothes, which was introduced by the Mahatma Gandhi, are only worn by the elderly people as youngsters consider the Khadi clothes out of style and because of that their cultural values which are attached to their clothing are fading. Moreover, this would also affect the economy of the country owing to the preference of international brands over locals.  Therefore, these malls and shopping complexes have not only affected local shops, but also made the young generation neglect their culture.

To conclude, in my opinion, with the introduction of shopping complexes, people have forgotten their culture, but this has also facilitated them with popular brands and their qualitative products, which would be a positive development.

A trend has been observed in the contemporary era, related to the rise in the number of shopping malls in the urban areas to facilitate the buying experience of the citizens, however this has been attributed to the closure of small shops in local areas. This essay believes that this growth in the increasing number of showrooms is a negative development as it promotes inflation and joblessness.

Price rise is apparent in a plethora of basic amenities, such as ready-made clothes and food. If a person wants to buy 10 kg flour from a shopping mall, it will cost him or her at least 15-20% extra as compared with the price by a local vendor. Fancy super-stores are affecting the shopping experience of buyers on the one hand, and their pockets on the other hand. Thus, this marketing gimmick is adversely impacting the buying capacity of shoppers.

More so, materialism is being promoted as people tend to buy some products unnecessarily just by getting aroused through some TV commercials. This not only encourages the individuals to purchase items not in use but also spoils the habits of young members of a family. Besides this, the problem of unemployment is also inclining as a result of giant mall culture. To further corroborate my opinion, when small shops are shut, these small-scale businesses lose their jobs. Considering all the above factors, materialism and unemployment are increasing due to shopping malls.

In conclusion, rather than benefiting the citizens, this modern buying culture acts as a negative effect on the pockets of the masses, and also leads to joblessness in rural areas.
