It is obvious that the extraction and usage of oil, coal and gas poses a threat to the environment we live in. This means that more energy has to be generated from renewable sources. However, such type of energy is very expensive to produce and requires heavy investment.

Undoubtedly, effort should be made to preserve the surrounding we live in in its pristine form. When fossil fuels are burnt to generate energy, dozens of poisonous substances are expelled into the air. The carbon dioxide particles are inhaled when we breathe, making irreversible damage to our bodies. Consequently, life expectancy decreases because pollution is the main cause of deadly diseases among the population. In Cairo, for instance, pollution has already taken its toll on the people and the hospitals are packed with patients with lung problems. Furthermore, environment contamination by the use of traditional energy sources has led to a problem which seems to be insurmountable – the global warming.

However, critics of renewable energy have made claims which are justified. Firstly, green energy is very expensive to harness. Secondly, it requires new technology to be developed which entails years of costly research. Thirdly, it is hard to implement any environmentally friendly technology and predict the output. For example, the idea of producing energy from seaweed in Scotland failed. Although having undergone all the necessary testing in a lab, it did not reach the intended capacity on site and needed further subsidies.

To sum up, although green energy should be the top priority for the future generations, mankind has to understand that the change is not going to happen overnight. Moreover, the cost to the taxpayer should be considered.
