Feeling loved, connected and appreciated is a vital aspect of one’s existence, especially when it concerns our family and friends. Few people believe that gifts are a great way to show affection and appreciation to our loved ones, while others differ in their opinion. In this essay, I will discuss both the perspectives along with my opinion.

Several people, who are shy and introverted, usually struggle to express their feelings vocally and are perceived emotionally cold by their family members. Such people find presents a comfortable means of expressing their emotions and making their loved ones feel special. They prefer to choose their gifts with caution, something that not only symbolizes their love and concern for their family members, but also makes their lives smoother and comfortable. For instance, gifting a car to your dad who currently drives a two-wheeler can be a good approach to show your love. Many a times, people who can easily communicate their feelings to others also find immense pleasure in buying gifts – ranging from flowers to diamonds – for their loved ones in order to make their special events memorable for lifetime. For them, gifts are synonymous with pleasure.

For others, gifts do not symbolize love or anything significant but are just a formality. They strongly believe that happiness created by gifts is superficial and momentary. According to them, gifts are to impress, not to show your love or concern. As a way to show affection, care and respect towards their family members, they prefer to spend quality time with them. To strengthen the bond of love, they like to be present with their loved ones in a time of need, which for them is showing their genuine support and concern for the family. They appreciate their family members for their smallest achievements and motivate them further to achieve more in life.

In my opinion, gifts can be a good way to win the hearts of your loved ones, if they are chosen meaningfully and with effort; however, if done mechanically or superfluously, can do more harm than comforting our loved ones.

Nowadays, people express their feelings and emotions by giving presents to their loved ones. Some people think that giving gifts to someone is a sweet gesture of care and love, whereas some people believe in other ways of showing their concern. There are different opinions in both views, which I will be discussing further.

In today’s busy and self-absorbed life, we do not get enough time to spend with our family and friends. People forget to make others realise how important their presence is. Communication gap between family members makes relationships strained. In a way, gifts are not only important to start a relationship but also to maintain it. In addition, the simple act of gifting can surprise our loved ones and make them respond with the same warmth. This helps in building a healthy bond between two individuals. What is more, some people are not able to say what they feel for others. So, they find gifts as the best way of expressing their feelings.

Looking at the other side, love and care can also be shown by a simple smile and a warm hug. A smile is the cheapest and simplest effort to show care. A lot of people need someone to listen to their problems and empathise with them. So, if we give our time to someone, it becomes more valuable than any present. People with limited incomes cannot afford to give presents. They shower their love and concern with encouraging words and valuable advice. Furthermore, by cooking delicious food and going out together, we can showcase our love and affection for someone.

In my opinion, we do not always need money to buy gifts to exhibit our emotions. There are many alternatives to express our love and care. Giving gifts to someone should be unconditional and we must not expect the same in return. A relationship should not be compared and evaluated on the basis of such offerings.

Although some believe that there are other methods to replace such practice, it is perceivable that giving gifts is still the most influential way to show one's love and care. This statement will be analysed in the following paragraphs, supported by relevant examples.

Tangible presents can exist eternally, and this thus can remind the giver of the gift for a long time. Although actions taken such as sharing meaningful words can be emotionally effective, they are expected to be evanescent as time elapses. Presents, however, can leave one with a solid memory of a particular person and his thoughts. In fact, as is the case with many loyal families' customs, they focus on sending out presents to their loved ones more than doing anything else so that their affinity can be remembered for generations.

Practicality is another distinctive aspect that presents can offer. For example, my grandmother has been suffering from muscular pain for a long time. Although she would appreciate our effort to spend time with her to express our affection, giving her a massage machine could be more efficient. The present would not only show our care but also offer a solution to her lifetime health problem. Hence, it can be demonstrated that presents intensify one's sense of affinity by fulfilling dual purposes; showing one's love and giving what the person is in need of. This then clearly substantiates that gifts contain more meaningful terms than sharing endearment.

In conclusion, the aforementioned ideas evidently encapsulate two reasons explaining how tangible presents can be the most effective way to express someone's love.
