The Real Junk Food Project is an initiative founded by Adam Smith. Smith, who worked as a head chef for a decade, became inspired to start the project while traveling in Australia. Witnessing the enormous amount of food waste in the agricultural and catering (16) , he felt compelled to take action. The (17) of the project is to address the issue of food waste by collecting discarded food from supermarkets and other sources and transforming it into nutritious meals.
The scale of global food waste is staggering, with approximately one-third of all food produced for human (18) being wasted each year. Smith founded The Real Junk Food Project to bridge the gap between hunger and excess food, while also raising awareness about the magnitude of food waste.
In 2013, Smith opened the first Real Junk Food café in his hometown of Leeds. Since then, the concept has spread to various locations around the world, including Los Angeles, Brazil, Warsaw, and Zurich. The fundamental principle behind the project is simple: volunteers gather food from farms, restaurants, factories, and supermarkets. These collected (19) are then used to prepare meals that are sold in the café. The unique aspect of the café is its "pay- as-you-feel" (PAYF) approach, which ensures that everyone can access the meals. Customers are encouraged (20) what they believe the meal is worth based on their financial capacity. Additionally, individuals who cannot afford to purchase meals from the café have the opportunity to earn their meals by volunteering, such as assisting with tasks like washing dishes.

Since 1986, the Japanese have enjoyed the highest life expectancy anywhere in the world. What makes the Japanese live longer than anyone else?
The rise in life expectancy started to happen in the 1950s as a result of medical advances. The next important step occurred in 1961 when everyone was able to get health insurance, not just the rich. Unlike in some countries, life expectancy is high for all classes of people, however much they earn.
The Japanese would like to increase life expectancy even more. A lot of people still smoke and people there are also becoming fatter as their diet changes. That is why people are looking more and more at the island of Okinawa which has the highest life expectancy in Japan. How is it possible that of every 100,000 people, 35 of them live to be over 100? One factor is the Okinawan diet. The people there eat more vegetables and beans and less meat and other animal products. Their lifestyle is also less stressed and more active. The island is less crowded and many people have gardens which they work in during their free time. However things are changing even on Okinawa. The younger generation are leading a more 'western' lifestyle and are starting to suffer because of it.

IV. READING
Read the text and choose the best answer for the questions below.
The biggest benefit of reducing food waste is clear — over 10 percent of US households experience food insecurity, and giving food that’s safe but destined for those landfills to those in need could help millions lead healthier, better lives.
But there’s another benefit of reducing food waste, and the EPA recently shined a spotlight on it in a news report: “The Environmental Impacts of U.S. Food Waste.”. “This uneaten food results in a ‘waste’ of resources—including agricultural land, water, pesticides, fertilizers, and energy—and environmental impacts—including greenhouse gas emissions and climate change,” the authors write in the report.
According to the EPA, food waste accounts for 2 percent of US greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, meat accounts for nearly 60% of greenhouse gases produced from food production, study finds.
The EPA report authors argue that there are great disproportionate benefits to reducing animal product waste. That’s because animal products typically require much more land, water, and energy — and emit more of the greenhouse gases carbon and methane — than plant-based foods such as vegetables.
How can we waste less meat at home?
“A lot of people think their food is bad when it’s actually still perfectly good to eat,” Dana Gunders, executive director of ReFED, told me. “Don’t get me wrong! I’m not saying that these date labels are useless. The dates on food indicate when something is of top quality or it’s freshest, but they’re not telling you the food is bad or that you can’t eat it’’. Her advice? “If it looks fine, smells fine, and tastes fine, it’s okay to eat.”
Can’t eat it soon? Put it in the freezer. “Freezers are a magic pause button,” Gunders said.
Also, plan ahead. “If you can, sketch out an accurate plan of your week.” Gunders said. ‘I know that it will prevent you from buying unnecessary products and waste time on thinking about what to eat. But the true reason here is because shopping is where you commit to the food regardless of whether you eat it or not.” The responsibilities should also be shouldered by retailers and manufacturers. Harvard experts suggest requiring manufacturers that choose to use the phrase “best if used by,” and reserve “expires on” for more high-risk foods. Furthermore, passing laws that ban food from landfills would be useful. This motivates businesses to donate more unsold food and work harder to prevent waste.
A big change
“Everyone can see what’s happening, they just don’t know what it is costing them,” Bruce Taylor of Enviro- Stewards once said. He estimates significant food waste in many food processing facilities. These employees, despite their awareness of the situation, are just used to inefficient processes and faulty machinery. It can take an observer — him, in this example — to come in and notice waste, put a dollar value on it, and suggest small changes that can save money and efficiency. In one example, his employees at a lobster processing factory pulled what was left off each lobster at the end of the processing line, which amounted to around $350,000 a year.
That growing global population will also likely be eating more meat, and in the short term at least, much of it will likely come from factory farms. Food waste reduction will be an important tool in mitigating the number of animals slaughtered— and the system’s immense environmental and ethical toll.
21. According to the EPA, how much percent does meat account for in the amount of greenhouse gases from food waste?
A. nearly two percent
B. one-third
C. almost two-thirds
D. over 10 percent
22. What does Dana Gunders say about the date labels on food?
A. The dates are an indicator of whether or not the food is still edible.
B. Many people follow the labels and throw food away even when it is still good to eat.
C. The date labels are useless and consumers should not believe them.
D. We can know when the food is best used by looking at these dates.
23. According to Dana Gunders, why should we outline an eating plan for the whole week?
A. Because we will automatically commit ourselves to finishing the food that we buy.
B. Because it saves the time spent on deciding what to eat.
C. Because it will help consumers to spend less money on buying unnecessary products.
D. Because it will encourage us to eat at home more.
24. Which solution to reducing food waste is NOT mentioned in the paragraph?
A. imposing legal restrictions
B.putting special phrases on food which is high-risk
C.motivating manufacturers to donate unsold food
D. making a plan
25. What can best explain the attitude of the employees at the company observed by Bruce Taylor?
A. They refuse to change their faulty system even though they are aware of the problems.
B. They are aware of the problems but they are used to them.
C. They are fully aware of the problems and wish to take actions against food waste.
D.They are too inexperienced and incompetent to follow changes.

Renewable energy is the future
Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels. Burning them increases the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. If we continue to use fossil fuels the way we do now, we will soon run (26) of them.
Fortunately, we no longer have to depend only on fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas. We can use renewable energy from sources such as wind, rain, waves, and sunlight, which can be replaced (27)
. In addition, such energy has a low environmental impact. Renewable energy used to be very expensive. In recent years, (28) , it has become cheaper and easier to produce thanks to technological advances.
Wind energy is one of the cleanest and most sustainable type of energy. It does not release carbon emissions and is entirely renewable as there will always be wind. Solar power is the most (29) source of renewable energy. It exists in large quantities and is freely available. It is also completely renewable as the sun will keep on shining. Hydropower, a form of renewable energy that uses the force of fast-moving water to produce electricity, is even more reliable than solar or wind power.
There are other types of renewable energy available. In the future, we will need to use more renewable energy sources to (30) our energy needs and reduce the negative impact of global warming.

Read the text about the influence of travel on brainpower and match each paragraph (A-E) with the correct headings.
Travel broadens the mind, but can it change the brain?
A. Research shows that taking a gap year or going abroad can positively influence your brain and make it more open to new ideas. Traveling abroad, you can make new friends and gain stories to tell. But that’s not all: you can also improve your brainpower.
B. It is suggested by research that those who have lived abroad are more creative. Evidence has been found to support this argument. “Someone who lives abroad and doesn’t immerse in the local culture will likely get less of a creative boost than someone who travels abroad and really engages in the local environment,” he says.
C. The results also showed that when they returned home after traveling, travelers also tended to show an increase in openness to new experiences, agreeableness and emotional stability. Tom Champion, 26, a student from the University of Sheffield who is studying in Singapore for 18 months, says he has become more accepting and compassionate since living abroad. “Seeing the world through a foreigner’s eyes has led me to realize my previously invisible cultural habits and gain an ability to understand others,” he says.
D. Moving abroad also allows young adults to gain a sense of responsibility and independence. Nikitha Aithal moved to the UK from India, and later worked in Spain for a year as part of her undergraduate language degree. She says: “Living and working in Spain made me understand the difficulties my parents went through when moving to the UK – simple things such as setting up a bank account or paying bills.”
E. So if you’re in the fortunate position of being able to choose whether or not to travel, why not take the plunge and explore the world – your brain will thank you for it.

Volunteer Work.
Australians spend an incredible 700 million hours volunteering every year. Research suggests that volunteering can have a (21) impact not only on those in need but on your own wellbeing too. In fact, a recent study showed that volunteers were 42% more likely to say they were very happy than those who did not participate in volunteer work.
Despite technology making it easier than ever for us to (22) with others, many people are still lacking meaningful relationships to provide a true sense of meaning to their lives. Volunteering addresses our need to belong and creates a human connection which can then translate to quality friendships, learning opportunities and even the chance to mentor others. (23) can also prevent loneliness by getting us out of the house and offering a sense of purpose and routine. As a consequence, it’s not uncommon to find a renewed sense of meaning by devoting time to help others.
Volunteering is a great way to stay physically active and healthy. Whether you’re volunteering outdoors to
(24) the environment, visiting people at different locations or filling care packages for people in need, doing good for the community can certainly come with physical health benefits. Making the effort to head out into the community has been shown to lower your risk of heart disease, and even reduce the risk of premature death, with a study showing that volunteers has a lower mortality rate (25) non- volunteers. Read the text about An Amazing Walk. Choose the answer, A, B or C, which correctly completes the sentence.
AN AMAZING WALK
School textbooks are full of stories about Columbus and Magellan and their journeys across the world. Perhaps Dave Kunst should be in there too. On June 20th, 1970, Dave and his brother John left their home in Minnesota on foot, with their mule, Willie Makeit.
On October 5th, 1974, Dave returned home after walking all the way round the world. But, was he the first person to do this? George Schilling walked from 1897 to 1904 but no one is sure if he walked the whole way or not. Dumitru Dan, from Romania, certainly walked around the world between 1911 and 1923 but he had to stop for several years because of the First World War. Dave was the first person to complete the whole walk in one journey and that’s why he is the most famous of the three.
Dave walked a total of 23,255 km through 13 countries. To start, Dave and John walked east to New York and then flew across the Atlantic to Lisbon in Portugal. From there, they walked across Europe, into Turkey where they entered Asia. In Afghanistan, bandits attacked the two brothers with guns. Sadly, John was badly shot and died and Dave spent four months in hospital recovering. When he was better, his other brother, Peter, came to join him and they continued into Pakistan and the famous Khyber Pass. They crossed India to Calcutta and from there crossed the Indian Ocean to Australia. They had to leave Willie Makeit behind because animals can’t enter Australia but, when they arrived in Perth, the Australians gave them a new mule.
Halfway across Australia, Peter had to return home to work and Dave was alone but he soon met a school teacher called Jenni who travelled with him all the way to Sydney. Dave said goodbye to her there and took his final flight to California. From there it was an ‘easy’ 2,500 km home on his own! The story has a happy ending. Soon after he finished the walk, Dave returned to Australia and, a year later, he and Jenni got married.
