II. READING

TASK 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B, or C to each of the questions.

Is the generation gap in America no longer a severe problem as it used to be? Dating back to the 1960s when teenagers tended to lash out the values and goals of their parents as well as rebel against the authority figures, the incendiary conflicts between older and younger generations increased sharply. It’s because teenagers' world wasn’t any longer limited in a narrow society that wasn’t mobile, and instead of going to church every weekend, they were exposed to various forms of social media like television and radios. They got access to huge sources of new ideas, which liberated them from old-fashioned and boring lifestyles whereas many older people were conservative and didn’t accept differences disturbing their normal life. Over time, however, the tension between generations has been alleviated due to the improved mutual understanding of baby boomers, Millennials and even Zillennials in many fields of life. According to recent research, the largest generational discrepancies between young and old in the United States are the use of technology and taste in music. Nevertheless, in terms of technological use, many older people gradually learn how to use a laptop or smartphone to surf the Internet from their children and especially their grandchildren due to their recognition of huge technological benefits. Regarding the musical differences, unlike in the past, older generations nowadays appear to give fewer critical remarks on what type of music teens should listen to and begin to accept the variety of music tastes when living under the same roofs.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

D. The reduction of the generation gap in America in the past.

4. Why did the older generation refuse to access new things?

A. Because they thought those things were tedious.

B. Because they loved to go to church every weekend.

C. Because they didn’t want to change their normal life.

D. Because they weren’t able to learn technological devices.

5. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Nowadays there is no longer a generation gap.

Carbon footprint is one of the main contributors to global warming. As mentioned in the media, members of the public are widely advised to reduce their carbon footprint and the specific steps to cut it down can be followed easily.

First, carbon dioxide is largely emitted from fossil fuel combustion in transportation, so people can shift away from petro used cars to eco-friendly vehicles running on electricity or clean ethanol. Driving less is another way to lessen a significant amount of exhaust fumes. It’s encouraged to ride electric bikes to work for short distances and take a train or a bus for long journeys. Second, lowering energy waste at home can make a big difference. Considering household appliances like lights or TVs, when they are not in use, homeowners should switch off them and better to remove their plugs from the sockets to save more energy. According to a report, homeowners can save between $100 and $200 each year by doing so. In addition, it’s wasteful to set your fridge and freezer temperatures lower than necessary, staying between 35° and 38°F to keep fresh food and 0 degrees for freezers. Last but not least, about 268 million tons of trash a year is produced by the U.S. Reducing energy consumption by recycling, therefore, can help slash greenhouse gas emissions substantially. Besides, shoppers should take reusable bags or canvas to the stores and avoid single-use containers.

In short, through these simple tips and concerted efforts, this environmental issue is no longer pressing.

Like many other school leavers, Duong is coping with the issue of high life-plan anxiety. There are two conventionally available options for her to consider: entering the world of work or enrolling in the university system. She has finished high school this year and wants to get work immediately; however, it’s difficult for her to go ahead with her plan due to her parents’ objections. In Viet Nam’s society, it’s a common practice that people with low qualifications rarely earn others’ respect and have fewer opportunities to get promotions in their career ladder. That’s why her parents strongly expect that her distinguished academic result of the national entrance examination can help her win a place at a popular economic university despite her family’s state of financial crisis. In contrast, she doesn’t want to put more strain on her family with costly tuition fees and huge student loan debts during the four years of university. She has convinced her parents to let her find a stable job to support her family several times before, but they haven’t agreed yet. Yesterday she had a consultation meeting with Mr Trung, her homeroom teacher. He advised her to give in her parents’ demand by choosing a university with reasonable fees and scholarships offered to excellent students.  Meanwhile, she can obtain a part-time job to relieve the cost burden, accumulate more experience and decorate her future CV. Now she is taking his advice into account and ready to persuade her parents to change their minds one more time.

II. READING

TASK 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B or C to each of the questions.

When it comes to preparations for studying abroad, the very first challenge for students is how to live independently. Stepping out of their comfort zone to live and study in a faraway country often ingrains an obscure fear of loneliness and helplessness. Therefore, if you have a plan to earn a degree in a foreign country, you need to equip yourselves with essential skills to start a truly independent life as soon as possible. First and foremost, you do not need to be an excellent cook but should know basic cooking skills to feed yourselves. Suppose that you experienced a pandemic period, you would have to cook at home due to social distancing and most restaurant closures. Second, clean-up and household skills are of equal importance. To lower accommodation costs, many students often choose to share apartments with other mates. Definitely, no one wants to stay with those who are untidy and do not know how to do simple household tasks, so make sure that you can do daily housework well enough. Third, money management is a challenging task for most overseas students. Some students are often flat broke at the end of the month because they cannot handle their budget. It’s advisable to be a smart shopper by making a suitable shopping list and keeping an accurate record of your daily expenses to avoid pointless debt. In short, the pieces of advice will hopefully make your independent life easier when you go to university in another country.
