A. Cách dùng But for

- But for: nếu không có, thường dùng trong câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3

Ví dụ:

But for your help, I would have failed the exam.

(Nếu không có sự giúp đỡ của bạn, tôi đã trượt kỳ thi rồi.)

But for her encouragement, I would have given up.

(Nếu không có sự khích lệ của cô ấy, tôi đã bỏ cuộc rồi.)

- But for = Except for: ngoại trừ

Ví dụ: But for John, everyone enjoyed the party.

(Ngoại trừ John, mọi người đều thích buổi tiệc.)

B. Cấu trúc But for

But for trong câu điều kiện loại 2

- But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + V

- But for the fact that + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + V

Ví dụ: But for the fact that she advised me, I would have made a mistake.

(Nếu không phải vì cô ấy đã khuyên tôi, tôi đã mắc sai lầm.)

But for trong câu điều kiện loại 3

- But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + have PII

- But for the fact that + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + have PII

Ví dụ: But for her warning, I would have been in danger.

(Nếu không có lời cảnh báo của cô ấy, tôi đã gặp nguy hiểm.)

C. Bài tập về cấu trúc But for

I. Sử dụng cấu trúc but for để viết lại những câu sau sao cho nghĩa không đổi:

1. If it weren’t for the fact that my teacher called me, I’d have missed the task.

2. Minh might have gone to the market to pick me up, if it hadn’t been for her broken motorbike.

=> But for ______________________________

3. Hoa want to visit her relatives but the her sickness isn’t over yet.

4. If I were to know where your dog was, I should call you right away.

5. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I had so many works, I could have spent all day with you.

=> But for ________________________________

Đáp án:

1. But for the fact that my teacher called me, I’d have missed the task.

3. Hoa would visit her relatives but for her sickness.

4. But for not knowing where your dog was, I couldn’t call you right away.

5. But for the fact that I had so many works, I could have spent all day with you.

II. Viết lại câu với cấu trúc but for

1. If I had not more money, I wouldn’t buy a new car.

2. If she had not more free time, she wouldn’t travel the world.

3. If she studied harder, she would pass the exam.

4. If they weren’t so busy, they would join us for dinner.

5. If they had studied harder, they would have passed the exam.

6. If he had known about the party, he would have come.

7. If we had arrived on time, we would have caught the train.

8. If she had practiced more, she would have won the competition.

9. If she had more time, she would volunteer at the local shelter.

Đáp án:

1. But for my lack of money, I would buy a new car.

2. But for her busy schedule, she wouldn’t travel the world.

3. But for her lack of effort in studying, she would pass the exam.

4. But for their busy schedule, they would join us for dinner.

5. But for their lack of effort in studying, they would have passed the exam.

6. But for his lack of knowledge about the party, he would have come.

7. But for our delay in arriving on time, we would have caught the train.

8. But for her insufficient practice, she would have won the competition.

9. But for her busy schedule, she would volunteer at the local shelter.
