Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 13 to 22.
Surveillance Capitalism
In the digital age, personal data has become the most valuable resource, often described as the “new gold” of the 21st century. [I] The exponential growth of information—from just 1% stored digitally in 1986 to nearly all data by 2013—has enabled companies to harvest human experiences as raw material for profit. This phenomenon, known as Surveillance Capitalism, is driven by technology giants such as Google, Meta, and Amazon. Unlike traditional capitalism, which relied on labor and natural resources, this new system thrives on extracting, analyzing, and monetizing personal data. While it has created powerful business models, it also raises serious concerns about privacy, autonomy, and the health of democratic societies.
Surveillance Capitalism works through a clear mechanism. First, platforms collect vast amounts of information about user activities, ranging from search queries to shopping habits. Next, algorithms and artificial intelligence process these patterns to predict preferences and future behavior. Finally, the insights are used to influence decisions, whether through targeted advertising, dynamic pricing, or subtle nudges that shape emotions and opinions. In this way, corporations do not simply respond to consumer demand; they actively create and modify it. Compared to traditional capitalism, which produced goods in factories, Surveillance Capitalism produces behavioral change, turning everyday actions into opportunities for profit.
The ethical implications of this system are profound. [II] Algorithms often exploit cognitive biases, manipulating users without their awareness. Privacy is eroded as data is collected without meaningful consent, and sensitive information is commodified like any other product. Cases such as Clearview AI’s unauthorized data collection in France or Facebook’s fines in Italy highlight the risks of unfair practices. Beyond commercial concerns, democratic values are threatened when surveillance blurs the line between corporate interests and state control. Moreover, exposure to curated content designed to maximize engagement can harm mental health, fueling anxiety and political polarization. [III] These issues demonstrate that Surveillance Capitalism is not only an economic model but also a social force with far-reaching consequences.
Efforts to regulate this system have begun worldwide, yet challenges remain. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and California’s Consumer Privacy Act represent important steps, while India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act seeks to strengthen individual rights. [IV] Moving forward, stronger frameworks, antitrust measures, and global cooperation are essential to limit exploitation. At the same time, empowering users through data literacy and promoting privacy-by-design in technology can help restore balance. Surveillance Capitalism is unlikely to disappear, but with ethical innovation and collective action, societies can ensure that digital progress serves human dignity rather than undermines it.

Read the following passage about the workforce of the future and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
As technological innovations continue to change the workplace, we are seeing more industries entrust their operations to new gadgets, software and programs that can transform the workplace. One such technology that has the potential to revolutionise workplaces in the coming years is RPA (Robotic Process Automation). With more industries starting to embrace RPA, software, RPA robots would be able to handle mundane, repetitive tasks like some of the clerical work normally dealt with by administrative staff, thereby lowering running costs and increasing productivity.
There is a common concern that companies employing technology like RPA are only interested in increasing their profit margins through cost reduction, and that this trend would eventually leave most of the workforce jobless. However, while it is true that the menial tasks of administrative and clerical jobs are likely to be taken over by automation, the demands on the average office worker will evolve to include more creative work, managerial duties and communication with clients and suppliers.
With this shift in focus, the skills required of future workers are also bound to change. Moving away from basic data entry skills, the workers of the future will be expected to have transferable problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Those will enable them to tackle any difficult situation and work independently to find solutions.
The ability to adapt and be agile would also be essential in a world that is likely to become increasingly volatile, uncertain and complex. Having such flexibility, coupled with the desire to keep learning and the initiative to step forward, the successful workers of the future are those who will be able to use their skills to seek out opportunities, make improvements and take on new challenges wherever they'll be working.
By equipping our future generation of workers with such business skills, we can ensure that when automation fully takes over, our workers will have the survival skills to become better employees and leaders of the future.

Question 25. The word “Those” in paragraph 3 refers to _____.
A. shift in focus
B. basic data entry skills
C. problem-solving and critical thinking skills
D. future workers
Question 26. Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?
A. Future workers will need fewer skills as the focus moves to technological development.
B. A shift in focus mainly affects workplace technology rather than workers’ skills.
C. As priorities change, the skill set needed for future workers will inevitably evolve.
D. The skills of future workers will be unlikely to change despite the shift in focus.

A Plastic Ocean: a film review
A Plastic Ocean is a film to make you think. Think, and then act. We need to take action on our dependence on plastic. We've been producing plastic in huge quantities since the 1940s. Drink bottles, shopping bags, toiletries and even clothes are made with plastic. We live in a world full of plastic, and only a small proportion is recycled. What happens to all the rest? This is the question the film A Plastic Ocean answers. It is a documentary (31) _____. Spoiler alert: the impact is devastating.
The film begins as a journey to film the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale. But during the journey the filmmakers (journalist Craig Leeson and environmental activist Tanya Streeter) make the shocking discovery of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. (32) _____. In total, they visited 20 locations around the world during the four years it took them to make the film. The documentary premiered in 2016, and is now on streaming services such as Netflix.

But the film doesn't only present the negative side. In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to reverse the tide of plastic flowing around the world. They present short-term and long-term solutions. These include avoiding plastic containers and 'single-use' plastic products as much as possible. Reuse your plastic bags and recycle as much as you can. In addition, the filmmakers (34) _____, and look at how technology is developing that can convert plastic into fuel.
We make a staggering amount of plastic. In terms of plastic bags alone, we use five hundred billion worldwide annually. Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and at least 8 million of those are dumped into the oceans. (35) _____.
