I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

- correctly identify and pronounce the words: yogurt, yams, yo-yos, zoo, zebu and zebra.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks.

- Self-control and independent learning: perform all four skills.

3. Attributes

- Study hard to review the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learnt.

- Play the games fair.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP & REVIEW (5 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To review the vocabulary of the letters Y/y and Z/z (yogurt, yams, yo-yos, zoo, zebu, zebra.).

b. Content:

- Game: “Clapping hands”

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can remember the vocabulary of the letters Y/y and Z/z (yogurt, yams, yo-yos, zoo, zebu, zebra.).

Game: “Clapping hands”

- Divide the class into two teams.

- Put several pictures/ flashcards on the board.

- Have pupils sit facing each other.

- Say a word, e.g. yogurt.

 

- Have pupils clap their knees once, clap their hands once and then clap their partner’s hands once as they both say, e.g. /j/ /j/” for yogurt.

- Continue playing the game in the same way.

- Check their friends’ pronunciation.

 

- Work in two teams.

- Look at the pictures/ flashcards on the board.

- Sit facing each other.

- Listen to the word, e.g. yogurt.

- Clap and say the word correctly, e.g./j/ /j/” for yogurt.

 

 

- Continue playing game.

 

- Check their friend’s pronunciation.

2. ACTIVITY 1 (10 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To correctly identify and pronounce the words yogurt, yams, zoo, zebra and yo-yos.

b. Content:

- Activity 1. Circle and match. Then say.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can correctly identify and pronounce the words yogurt/ yams/zoo/zebra/ yo-yos.

Activity 1. Circle and match. Then say.

Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to Picture a (say “Look at Picture a.”).

Step 2: Elicit the word indicated by the picture. When pupils answer correctly, confirm by saying “yo-yos” but don’t write the word on the board.

Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for Pictures b “yams”, c “yogurt”, d “zoo” and e “zebra”.

Step 4: Draw pupils’ attention to the set of letters. Have them circle the letters to make words (say “Circle the letters to make words.”). Then ask them to match the words with the correct pictures. Go around the class to offer help, if necessary.

Step 5: Write the set of letters on the board. Nominate five pupils to come to the front and circle the letters to make words on the board. Encourage the rest of the class to help them and to check their own answers.

Step 6: Point to each word and encourage pupils to say it both individually and in chorus (say “Say: yogurt/ yams/ zoo/ zebra/ yo-yos.”). Correct pupils’ pronunciation if necessary, and praise them when their pronunciation is good.

a. Objectives:

- To correctly identify and pronounce the words zebu, yogurt, zebra, zoo, yams.

b. Content:

- Activity 2. Let’s play.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can correctly identify and pronounce the words zebu, yogurt, zebra, zoo, yams.

Activity 2. Let’s play. “What and where”

Step 1: Write five target words on the board. Draw a circle around each word.

Step 2: Tell pupils to look at and remember the words. Explain that when you erase one of the words, pupils must try to remember it. When you erase a second word, pupils must try to remember both words. Continue until all the words have been erased and pupils can say all five from memory.

Step 3: Play the game.

- Pupils look at five target words in the circles.

- A board with five target words written on it. All the words are in circles.

4. FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (10 minutes)

* Option 1/ Game: “What’s missing?”

- Prepare pictures with the words zebu, yogurt, zebra, zoo, yams, yo-yos.

- Place pictures/ flashcards facing up on the board.

- Have pupils remember all the pictures.

- Tell pupils to close their eyes and take away one of the pictures. Then, tell the pupils to open their eyes.

- The first pupil to spot and say the missing picture wins.

* Option 2/ Game: “Rabbit and Turtle”

- Divide the class into teams, team A: Rabbit and team B: Turtle.

- Prepare pictures with the words zebu, yogurt, zebra, zoo, yams, yo-yos.

- Ask pupils in each team to choose the picture and say the correct word. If the pupil says the correct word, he/ she will go up one step.

- Encourage the pupils to say the correct words to go up.

- Continue until the pupils say the word correctly.

- The team that finishes first will win.
