Câu điều kiện loại 3 trong tiếng Anh

Lý thuyết Câu điều kiện loại 3

A. Câu điều kiện loại 1 và 2 trong tiếng Anh

Ví dụ tình huống:

- Last month Gary was in hospital for an operation. Liz didn't know this, so she didn't go to visit him. They met a few days ago. Liz said:

(Tháng trước Gary đã nằm viện để phẫu thuật. Liz đã không biết chuyện này, vì vậy cô ấy đã không đi thăm anh ấy được. Cách đây vài ngày họ gặp nhau. Liz nói:

- If I had known you were in hospital, I would have gone to visit you.

(Nếu tôi biết anh nằm viện, tôi đã đi thăm anh.)

Trong ví dụ trên, Liz nói: "If I had known you were in hospital ..." nhưng thực tế là cô ấy đã không biết rằng anh ấy nằm viện. Đây chính là dạng câu điều kiện loại 3.

Câu điều kiện loại 3 là câu điều kiện không có thực trong quá khứ. Điều kiện không thể xảy ra trong quá khứ, chỉ mang tính ước muốn trong quá khứ, một giả thiết trái ngược với thực trạng ở quá khứ.

Cấu trúc: If + had ('d) ... (If I had known/been/done ...)

Ví dụ:

- I didn't see you when you passed me in the street. If I'd seen you, of course I would have said hello. (but I didn't see you)

(Tôi đã không nhìn thấy anh đi qua tôi trên đường. nếu tôi thấy, tất nhiên tôi đã chào anh rồi. (nhưng tôi không nhìn thấy anh))

- I decided to stay at home last night. I would have gone out if I hadn't been so tired. (but I was tired)

(Tối qua tôi đã quyết định ở nhà. Tôi đã đi chơi nếu tôi không quá mệt. (nhưng thực tế tôi đã mệt))

- If he had been looking where he was going, he wouldn't have walked into the wall. (but he wasn't looking)

(Nếu anh ấy đã nhìn thấy được anh ấy đang đi đâu, anh ấy đã không đụng phải bức tường. (nhưng anh ấy không nhìn thấy))

- The view was wonderful. If I'd had a camera, I would have taken some photographs. (but I didn't have a camera)

(Khung cảnh thật tuyệt vời. Nếu tôi có máy ảnh, tôi đã chụp vài tấm. (nhưng thực ra tôi đã không có máy ảnh))

So sánh:

- I'm not hungry. If I was hungry, I would eat something. (hiện tại)

(Tôi không đói. Nếu tôi đói, tôi sẽ ăn một chút gì đó.)

- I wasn't hungry. If I had been hungry, I would have eaten something. (quá khứ)

(Tôi đã không đói. Nếu tôi đói, tôi đã ăn một chút gì đó.

B. Không sử dụng would trong mệnh đề if. Would được sử dụng ở các phần còn lại của câu

Ví dụ:

- If I had seen you, I would have said hello. (KHÔNG nói 'If I would have seen you')

(Nếu tôi nhìn thấy anh, tôi đã chào anh.)

Ghi chú: Phần viết tắt 'd có thể là would hoặc had.

Ví dụ:

- If I'd seen you (I'd seen = I had seen)

- I'd have said hello (I'd have said = I would have said)

C. Sử dụng had (done) sau wish

Tương tự như câu điều kiện loại 2, với câu điều kiện loại 3, ta cũng có thể sử dụng had (done) sau wish.

Cấu trúc: I wish something had happened (= I am sorry that it didn't happen) có nghĩa là: Tôi đã chờ điều đó xảy ra = Tôi lấy làm tiếc vì điều đó không xảy ra

Ví dụ:

- I wish I'd known that Gary was ill. I would have gone to see him. (but I didn't know)

(Giá như tôi biết được Gary đã bị ốm. Tôi đã đến thăm anh ấy. (Nhưng tôi không biết))

- I feel sick. I wish I hadn't eaten so much cake. (I ate too much cake)

(Tôi cảm thấy khó chịu. Giá như tôi đã không ăn nhiều bánh như vậy. (tôi đã ăn quá nhiều bánh))

- Do you wish you had studied science instead of languages? (you didn't study science)

(Bạn có ước ao được theo học ngành khoa học thay vì ngôn ngữ học không? (bạn đã không học ngành khoa học))

- The weather was cold while we were away. I wish it had been warmer.

(Khi chúng tôi ra đi trời rất lạnh. Tôi ước giá như trời ấm hơn.)

Không sử dụng would have sau wish trong những câu có cấu trúc như trên.

Ví dụ:

- I wish it had been warmer. (KHÔNG nói 'I wish it would have been')

D. So sánh would (do) và would have (done)

Hiện tại: If I had gone to the party last night, I would be tired now.

(I am not tired now)

(Nếu tối qua tôi đi dự tiệc, có lẽ bây giờ tôi sẽ bị mệt.)

(bây giờ tôi không bị mệt)

Quá khứ: If I had gone to the party last night, I would have met lots of people.

(I didn't meet lots of people)

(Nếu tối qua tôi đi dự tiệc, có lẽ tôi đã gặp được nhiều người.)

(Tôi đã không gặp được nhiều người)

So sánh would have và might have:

Ví dụ:

                  | we would/could have gone out.

                  | we could have gone out.

If the weather hadn't been so bad, |(= we would have been able to go out)

                  | we might have gone out

                  |(= perhaps we would have gone out)

Nếu thời tiết đã không quá xấu như vậy, có lẽ chúng tôi đã đi dạo chơi.

E. Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 3

Cấu trúc: Had + S + (not) + PP, S + would/could/might+ have + V3/ed

Ví dụ:

- If you hadn’t encouraged me, I would have given up. (Nếu bạn không động viên tôi, tôi ccos lẽ đã từ bỏ.) → Had you not encouraged me, I would have given up.

F. Biến thể câu điều kiện loại 3

Biến thể mệnh đề chính:

If + quá khứ hoàn thành, hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn.

Ví dụ:

- If Peter had left Hanoi for Thanh Hoa last Thursday, he would have been swimming in Sam Son beach last Saturday. (Nếu Peter rời Hà Nội đi Thanh Hóa vào thứ Năm tuần trước thì anh ấy đã đang bơi ở biển Sầm Sơn vào thứ Bảy tuần trước rồi.)

Biến thể mệnh đề “If...”

If + quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn, S  + would/could/might + have + V-pp/V-ed

- If Jenny hadn’t been taking care of the children last weekend, she would have gone out. (Nếu cuối tuần trước Jenny không phải chăm sóc bọn trẻ thì cô ấy đã ra ngoài chơi rồi.)

Task 1. Đọc đoạn văn và hoàn thành các câu dùng cấu trúc câu điều kiện loại 3.

Some scientists, such as Stephen Hawking, believe it’s possible that there are billions and billions of universes. Each universe has a different possible consequence for every action. In the universe we live in, for example, George Bush became President of the USA in January 2001, and Greece won the European Cup in July 2004. But in other universes, different things happened. Imagine if that’s true! In some universes, your parents didn’t meet, so you weren’t born. In another universe, a meteor didn’t strike the Earth, so the dinosaurs didn’t become extinct. In a different universe, your best friend won the lottery last summer and moved to a bigger house. In another parallel universe, you started learning English a year earlier, so you did this book last year! Somewhere else, Madonna wasn’t discovered, and so didn’t make any records. In another universe, Van Gogh was recognized as a great painter during his lifetime, and so didn’t die in poverty. And perhaps in several universes, there were enough lifeboats on the Titanic and so everyone on board survived. It makes you think, doesn’t it?
