I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

- pronounce the sound of the letter E/e in isolation and in words bell, pen, pencil and red correctly.

- say the words bell, pen, pencil and red correctly.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks

- Self-control & independent learning: perform pointing and saying task

3. Attributes

- Show confidence in pronouncing the sound of the letter E/e and saying the words: bell, pen, pencil and red.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP & REVIEW (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To create a friendly and lively atmosphere in the classroom.

b. Content:

- Game: Look and guess / Game: Pass the ball!

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can revise the letter and the sound I/i.

* Option 1: Game: Look and guess (ppt)

- Teacher shows a picture on a slide disappearing quickly in a few seconds.

- Pupils look and guess the words.

* Option 2: Game: Pass the ball!

- Greet the class. Encourage pupils to respond to your greeting.

- Play the music, pupils in each team take turns passing the ball. When the music ends, 3 pupils holding the ball stand up and say the words have the sound I/i.

- Ask pupils to introduce themselves.

- Introduce the new Unit 5: At the fish and chip shop.

- Look and guess the words.

- Greet teacher.

- Listen to the song and pass the ball.

- Say the words have the sound I/i.

- Look at the book and listen to the teacher.

2. ACTIVITY 1: EXPLORATION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils will be able to pronounce the sound of the letter E/e in isolation and in the words bell, pen, pencil and red correctly.

b. Content:

- Activity 1. Listen and repeat.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can pronounce the sound of the letter E/e and all the words bell, pen, pencil, red correctly and confidently.

Activity 1. Listen and repeat.

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture, saying Look at the picture, please! and describe the picture. Draw pupils’ attention to the words next to the things and the colour of the letter E/e. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the letter E/e, saying Point to the letter E/e, please!. Have them listen and repeat the sound of the letter E/e, saying Listen and repeat, please! more than once, if necessary.

Step 3: Tell pupils to point to the pencil in the picture and the word pencil, saying Point to the pencil and the word “pencil”. Ask them to listen and repeat the word, saying Listen and repeat, please! Then play the recording again, if necessary, for pupils to do choral and individual repetition. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the words bell, pen and red. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task.

Step 5: Play the recording again and have them listen, point to the letter E/e and the words bell, pen, pencil, red until they feel confident. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 6: Play the recording again and call a few pupils to say the sound of the letter E/e and the words bell, pen, pencil, red in front of the class. Say Good job! when they perform well.

- Look at the picture and answer the question: What can you see in the picture?

- Point to the letter E/e and say the sound after the teacher.

- Listen and repeat the sound twice.

- Point to the word pencil, listen and repeat.

- Listen and repeat: bell, pen, red.

- Listen carefully to the recording, and point to the words and repeat several times.

- Listen again and repeat the sound and words in front of the class.

- Find more words that have the sound E/e.

The picture is about the classroom. Ann and Ben (two English pupils) are sitting at the desk. Ben is holding a red pencil. A red pen is on the desk. The bell is on the desk too. On the board, there is a red stick note.

3. ACTIVITY 2: KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils will be able to point to the letter E/e and the things and say the sound of letter E/e and words bell, pen, pencil, red.

b. Content:

- Activity 2. Point and say.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can correctly point and say the sound E/e, the things, the colour and words bell, pen, pencil and red.

Activity 2. Point and say.

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture again, saying Look at the picture on page 26, please! Ask them to describe the picture. Draw their attention to the letter E/e, the things and the colour red, if necessary.

Step 2: Ask them to point to the letter E/e and say it, saying Point to the letter E/e and say, please!

Step 3: Ask them to point to the pencil and say the word pencil as a model, saying Point and say, please! Remind them of the sound of the letter e in the word pencil. Then ask one pupil to point to the pencil and to say the word pencil in front of the class. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the other words. Go around and correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 5: Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups to look at the picture, point to the letter E/e, the things/ colour and say the sound of the letter E/e and the words. Go around, offer help and correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 6: Invite a few pupils to point to the picture and say the sound of the letter E/e and the words (bell, pen, pencil, red) in front of the class. If they performed well, praise them, saying Good job! or Great!

- Look at the pictures and listen to the teacher.

- Look at the letter E/e, the words and things.

- Point to the letter E/e and say the sound.

- Point to pencil and say the word pencil.

- Point to the other things and say the words.

- Work in pairs: One points to the words, one says the sound and words.

- Point and say the words in front of the class.
