I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

- say the letter G/g, the words garden, girl, goat, gate, and the phrases a goat and a gate, a girl and a garden in a chant.

- trace the letter G/g.

- listen and identify the sentences: “There’s a gate. There’s a girl.”.

- read the learnt words garden, girl, goat, gate.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups

3. Attributes

- Show confidence in speaking by practicing saying the words from the learning tasks.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To create a friendly and lively atmosphere in the classroom.

- To revise the words in the previous lesson.

b. Content:

- Let’s play

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils recall and pronounce the words from the previous lesson correctly.

* Option 1: (ppt)

- Teacher writes letters i, e, g in big circles on the floor.

- Teacher says a word, pupils jump into the correct circle.

* Option 2:

- Greet the class. Encourage pupils to respond to your greeting.

- Invite a few pupils to point to the picture/ poster and pronounce the sound of the letter G/g and say the words garden, girl, goat, gate.

- Get pupils to open their books and look at Lesson 2, p. 32.

- Jump into the correct circle after the teacher says a word.

- Greet the teacher.

2. ACTIVITY 1: PRACTICE (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils have an opportunity to revise some learnt phrases: two locks, three clocks, four pots, five monkeys.

b. Content:

- Activity 1. Listen and chant.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can identify the words and read them with correct pronunciation.

Step 1: Have pupils look at the chant. Say Look at the chant, please! Draw pupils’ attention to the first line and explain its meaning. Ask them to pay attention to the letter G/g and the word goat. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Play the recording of the first line for pupils to listen and to get familiarised with the tune, saying Listen to the first line, please! Then have them listen again and repeat the sound of the letter g and the word goat individually and in chorus, saying Listen and repeat, please! If they chanted well, praise them, saying Well done! Follow the same procedure with other lines. Correct pronunciation, if necessary. Show them how to chant and clap hands.

Step 3: Play the recording all the way through again for pupils to listen and do choral and individual repetition, saying Listen and repeat, please! Then play the recording for them to listen and repeat until they feel confident, saying Now listen to the recording and repeat, please!

Step 4: Put the class into two groups to practise chanting and clapping. Each group should sing one verse of the chant, saying Chant in groups, please!

Step 5: Encourage some pupils to go to the front of the class to chant and clap their hands. The rest of the class may clap along to the rhythm. If they chanted well, praise them, saying Well done! or Very good! If there is enough time, ask pupils to look at the picture in Activity 3 and find the words (garden, gate, girl, goat) that are in the chant.

- Look at the chant.

- Pay attention to the first verse.

- Listen and repeat after the recording and clap your hands.

- Listen and do choral and individual repetition.

- Practise chanting and clapping ingroups.

- Some pupils chant in front of the class. The other clap hands along to the rhythm.

There are two verses in the chant. The letter G/g and the words goat, gate and the phrase a goat and a gate are introduced in the first verse. The letter G/g and the words girl, garden and the phrase a girl and a garden are introduced in the second verse. The letter G/g is in red.

e. Assessment:

- Performance products: Pupils’ chant.

- Assessment tools: Observation and help.

3. ACTIVITY 2: PRACTICE (7 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils remember the words they have learnt in the previous units.

b. Content:

- Activity 2. Listen and tick.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can identify things and say the words correctly.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Have pupils look at the pictures of Question 1, saying Look at the pictures in Question 1, please! What can you see? Can you see a garden and a gate? and say what they can see, saying A garden and a gate. Draw pupils’ attention to the boxes next to the letters a and b. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Invite some pupils to point to the pictures and say the words in front of the class, saying Point to the pictures and say, please! Eg: 1a: a garden, 1b: a gate.

Step 3: Play the recording of the first sentence for pupils to listen. Say Now listen to the recording, please! Play the recording of the first sentence several times, if necessary, for pupils to tick, saying Listen and tick, please!

Step 4: Ask pupils to say what they have heard and ticked. Say What did you hear? Did you hear “There’s a garden” or “There’s a gate”? If it says “There’s a gate.”, tick the box b. So b is the correct answer.

Step 5: Follow the same procedure with Question 2. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task.

Step 6: Call some pupils to the front of the class to point to the pictures and say what they have heard. E.g. 1. There’s a gate. 2. There’s a girl. If they said the correct words, praise them, saying Well done! or Very good!

- Point to the pictures of Question 1 and describe the pictures.

- Pay attention to the boxes next to the letters a and b.

- Look at the pictures of question 1 and answer.

- Listen to the teacher and repeat.

- Point to the pictures and say the words.

- Listen and tick.

- Follow the teacher’s instructions.

- Show their answers.

There are two questions in this activity. Question 1 includes the pictures: a. a garden and b. a gate. Question 2 includes the pictures: a. a girl and b. a goat.
