I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

- pronounce the sound of the letter W/w in isolation and in the words washing, water, Wendy and window.

- say the words washing, water, Wendy and window correctly.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks

- Self-control & independent learning: perform pointing and saying task

3. Attributes

- Show confidence in pronouncing the sound of the letter W/w and saying the words: water, Wendy, washing, window.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP & REVIEW (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To create a friendly and lively atmosphere in the classroom.

b. Content:

- Game: Pass the ball!

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can revise the letters and sound F/f.

Game: Pass the ball!

- Greet the class. Encourage pupils to respond to your greeting.

- Play the music, pupils in each team take turns to pass the ball. When the music ends, 3 pupils holding the ball stand up and say the words have sound F/f.

- Ask pupils to introduce themselves

- Introduce the new Unit 16: At home.

- Greet teacher.

- Play the game: listen to the song and pass the ball.

- Say the words have the sound F/f.

- Look at the book and listen to the teacher.

The lyrics and the recording of the song from Unit 15

e. Assessment

- Teacher observes and gives feedback.

2. ACTIVITY 1: EXPLORATION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils will be able to pronounce the sound of the letter W/w in isolation and in the words washing, water, Wendy and window.

- Activity 1. Listen and repeat.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can listen and pronounce the sound of the letter W/w and all the words washing, Wendy, water, window correctly and confidently.

Activity 1. Listen and repeat.

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture, saying Look at the picture, please! and describe it. Draw pupils’ attention to the words next to the things, the girl, what she’s doing and the colour of the letter W/w. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the letter W/w, saying Point to the letter W/w, please! Have them listen and repeat the sound of the letter W/w, saying Listen and repeat, please!

Step 3: Tell pupils to point to Wendy and/or the word Wendy in the picture, to listen to the recording and repeat the word Wendy. Ask them to listen to the recording again and repeat the word individually and in chorus, saying Listen again and repeat, please! Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the words washing, water and window. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task, if necessary.

Step 5: Play the recording again and have them listen, point to the letter W/w, the picture and say the sound of the letter and the words until they feel confident. Correct the pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 6: Call a few pupils to say the letter W/w and the words washing, water, Wendy and window in front of the class, saying Good job! when they perform well.

- Pupils look at the picture and answer the question: What can you see in the picture?

Where are they?

- Pupils point to the letter W/w and say the sound after the teacher.

- Pupils listen and repeat the sound twice.

- Pupils point to the word Wendy and the word Wendy listen and repeat.

- Pupils listen and repeat: washing, water, window.

- Pupils listen carefully to the recording, and point to the words and repeat several times.

- Pupils listen again and repeat the sound and words in front of the class.

- The picture is about a girl, named Wendy, is washing the window. The bucket of water is next to Wendy. Some drops of water are dropping.

The word Wendy is next to Wendy, the word window is next to the window, the word washing is next to Wendy and the word water is next to the bucket of water. The letter W/w in the words washing, water, Wendy and window is in red.

- The sound of the letter W/w is the focus of Unit 16.

3. ACTIVITY 2: KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Pupils will be able to point to the letter W/w and the person and things and say the sound of letter W/w and words washing, Wendy, water, window.

b. Content:

Activity 2. Point and say.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can point to the letter W/w, the sound of the letter W/w and the words washing, water, Wendy, window correctly.

d. Organisation

Activity 2. Point and say.

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture again. Ask them to describe it. Draw their attention to the letter W/w, the words washing, water, Wendy and window, if necessary.

Step 2: Get them to point to the letter W/w and say it aloud, saying Point to the letter W/w and say, please!

Step 3: Let them point to Wendy and say Wendy, saying Point to Wendy, please. Remind them of the sound of the letter W in the word Wendy. Then ask one pupil to point to Wendy and to say the word Wendy in front of the class.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the other things. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task.

Step 5: Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups to look at the picture, point to the letter W/w, the girl and the things and say the sound of the letter W/w, the words washing, water, Wendy and window. Go around and offer help or correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 6: Invite some pupils to point to the picture and say the sound of the letter and the words in front of the class. If they performed well, praise them, saying Good job! or Great!

- Pupils look at the pictures and listen to the teacher.

Look at the letter W/w, the words and things.

- Pupils point to the letter W/w and say the sound.

- Pupils point to Wendy and say the word Wendy.

- Pupils point to other things and say the words.

- Pupils work in pairs: One points to the words, one says the sound and words.

- Pupils point and say the words in front of the class.

5. FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP

* Option 1: Hot seat

Goal: Pupils will be able to revise the words they have learnt through the game Hot seat. Input: Some words from the previous lesson and the words washing, water, Wendy, window. Procedure:

Step 1: Tell pupils that they are going to play Hot seat. Explain how the game is played (as mentioned in Unit 3). You may play the game once as an example. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Divide the class into two teams. Call one pupil from each team to sit on the Hot seat, facing the classroom with the board behind them.

Step 3: Write a word on the board, e.g window. One of the team members in the Hot seat should help the pupil guess the word by air demonstrating it. They cannot say, spell or draw the word.

Step 4: Continue until each team member has described a word to the pupil in the Hot seat. Give one star for each right word. The team that gets more stars will win.

* Option 2: Word build challenge (PPT slides)

- Have pupils play word build, close all the books, guess the letter to make words.

- For wrong guessing, 1 part of the UFO will be built.

- Pupils will lose the game if the UFO is completed.
