I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills:

- pronounce the sound of the letter A/a in isolation and in the words apple, bag, can, hat correctly.

- point to the letter A/a, the things (apple, bag, can, hat) in the picture and say the sound of the letter A/a and the words apple, bag, can, hat.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work individually and groups to complete the learning tasks

3. Attributes

- Show active participation in learning activities.

- Show confidence in playing games.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To create a friendly and lively atmosphere in the classroom.

b. Content:

- Game: Simon says/ Make sentences

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils pronounce the sound of the letter A/a, and say the words apple, bag, can, hat.

* Option 1: Game: Simon says (ppt)

- Simon says

Simon says sit nicely!

Simon says listen!

Simon says be happy!

Simon says ball

- Have pupils answer with TPR actions.

- At the end of the game, teacher holds up a bag and says Simon says bag with a TPR action.

- Do the same with apple, hat and can.

* Option 2: Game: Make sentences

- Greet the class.

- Have one group of pupils sing the song on p. 11 in front of the class.

- Give pupils some flashcards (of a car, cup, cat, cake, book, bike, …) and let him/ her talk about possession.

- Have pupils open the books and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1 (Page 14).

- Answer teacher’s actions.

- Follow the teacher's instructions.

- Greet the teacher.

- Clap their hands and sing along.

- Make sentences about possession. e.g., I have a car.

- Open the books and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1.

- The pictures of the words bag, apple, hat and can
- Flashcards (of bag, apple, hat and can)

- Flashcards (of a car, cup, cat, cake, book, bike, …)

2. ACTIVITY 1: EXPLORATION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To help pupils learn by heart and understand the words.

b. Content:

- Activity 1. Listen and repeat.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can identify the words and read them with correct pronunciation.

Step 1: Open books or access hoclieu.vn. Have pupils look at the picture, saying Look at the picture, please! and answer some questions such as Who are they? Where are they? and What are they doing? Draw pupils’ attention to the words next to the things and the colour of the letter A/a. Check comprehension.

Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the letter A/a. Have them listen and repeat the sound of the letter A/a, saying Listen and repeat, please! more than once, if necessary.

Step 3: Tell pupils to point to the hat and the word hat, saying Point to the hat and the word “hat”. Ask them to listen and repeat the word, saying Listen and repeat, please! Then play the recording again, if necessary, for pupils to do choral and individual repetition. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 4: Repeat the same procedure with the words apple, bag and can. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 5: Play the recording again and have them listen, point to the letter A/a and the words apple, bag, can, hat and repeat until they feel confident. Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task.

Step 6: Call a few pupils to pronounce the sound of the letter A/a and say the words apple, bag, can, hat in front of the class (you may say Great! when they perform well).

- Look at the pictures and answer the questions.

- Pay attention to the words next to the things and the colour of the letter A/a.

- Point to the letter A/a, listen and repeat the sound of the letter A/a.

- Point to the hat and the word hat, listen and repeat this word.

- Point to the apple, bag, can and the word apple, bag and can, listen and repeat the words.

- Listen and repeat the words apple, bag, can, hat.

- Say the words apple, bag, can, hat in front of the class.

The picture is about a market on the street. A girl (Ann) and her mother are standing next to the fruit stall. There are some kinds of fruit on the stall including the red apples. Ann is wearing a bag and holding a can. Her mother is holding an apple. The seller is wearing a hat. The word apple is next to the apple, the word bag is next to the bag, the word can is next to the can. The word hat is next to the hat. The letter a in the words apple, bag, can and hat is in red. The sound of the letter A/a is the focus of Unit 3.

- Performance products: Pupils’ correct pronunciation.

3. ACTIVITY 2: KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION (10 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To help pupils identify things.

b. Content:

- Activity 2. Point and say.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can identify things.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture again, saying Look at the picture on Page 14, please! Ask them to describe the picture. Draw their attention to the letter A/a and the things, if necessary.

Step 2: Get them to point to the letter A/a and say it, saying Point to the letter A/a and say, please!

Step 3: Ask pupils to point to the apple and say the word apple as a model, saying Point and say, please! Remind them of the sound of the letter a in the word apple. Then ask one pupil to point to the apple and to say the word apple in front of the class. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with other things. Go around and correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 5: Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups to look at the picture, point to the letter A/a, the things and say the sound of the letter A/a and the words. Go around, offer help and correct pronunciation, if necessary.

Step 6: Invite a few pupils to point to the picture and say the sound of the letter and the words in front of the class. If they performed well, praise them, saying Well done! or Very good!

- Look at the pictures.

- Describe the picture.

- Point to the letter A/a, and say it.

- Point to the apple and say the word as a model.

- Say the word apple in front of the class.

- Point to the hat, can, bag and say the words as a model.

- Say the words hat, can, bag in front of the class.

- Work in pairs or in groups, point to the letter A/a, the things and say the sound of the letter A/a, and the words.

- Say the sound of the letter and the words in front of the class.

4. FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (3 mins)

* Option 1: Game: Who’s faster? (ppt)

- Invite 2 pupils to play the game.

- They stand back to back.

- Count 1, the pupils go one step apart.

- Count 2, the pupils go one more step.

- Count 3, the pupils go one more step and turn around.

- Teacher shows a flashcard. Who says the word faster gets the point.

- Can include the keywords in Units 1 and 2 in this game.

* Option 2: Game: Hot seat

- Tell pupils that they are going to play the game Hot seat. Explain how the game is played
(as mentioned in the steps below). Check comprehension.

- Divide the class into teams of four pupils. Call one pupil from each team to sit on the “hot seat”, facing the classroom with the board behind. Write a word on the board, e.g. bag.
Ask one of the team members to describe it to help the pupil in the “hot seat” to guess the word.

- Continue until each team member has described a word to the pupil in the “hot seat”.
Give one star for each right word. The team that gets more stars will win.

- With a better class, after the pupils become experts at the game, you can increase the difficulty. Write the words that pupils have learnt in the previous units such as ball, cake, cup,
