Task 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B, or C to each of the questions.

Family life has been changing across some Southeast Asian countries over the past few decades. Many years ago, most of teenagers lived with their families, spending several hours at school and the rest of time at home enjoying family atmosphere. Besides their studying, adolescents could do some housework like doing the dishes, cooking, taking care of younger children or supporting their family business. These days, studying takes up such a lot of time that they cannot help much with household chores and sometimes they even hardly have time to relax. This can lead to suffering worse health and losing the bond with their family. In families with higher income, parents are often so busy with their work that they send their children to private boarding schools, and the time these students share with families is shortened more and more. In many cases, high-schoolers meet their siblings and parents at weekends only. It’s believed that there are some advantages to live and study in academic places, but other benefits that schools are unlikely to provide should be taken into consideration. For example, these young learners can learn a lot from their parents about social skills and doing domestic chores. On one hand, some people think that teenage students prefer to have privacy than to be controlled by adults, which may be true. On the other hand, nothing can compare or replace the parents’ affection in terms of nurturing their children’s souls and their behaviours. Changes often bring positive results but how people consider what is important to maintain and preserve is worth thinking again.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The negative effect of living away from family.

B. Some changes in family life in Southeast Asian countries.

C. Teenagers love to live independently rather than rely on their parents.

D. Teenagers’ life today is much better than that of decades ago.

2. What does the word ‘this’ in line 10 mean?

A. The fact that students do not have time to relax.

B. The fact that students cannot help with family work.

C. The fact that students have to spend most of their time studying.

D. The fact that students do too much housework.

3. Long time ago young learners could help their parents with ___________.

A. family chores or parents’ business

B. family chores and earn money themselves

C. nothing because of their busy curricula

D. nothing because they were busy playing

4. What are the benefits of family education?

A. Children can learn about good conduct.

B. Children can learn about social skills.

C. Children can learn how to do business.

D. Children can learn about good conduct and social skills.

5. What is the most important thing in terms of raising a child?

A. Parents’ love

B. Parents’ control

C. Children’s privacy

D. Children’s independence

Task 2. Read the text. Match the sentence parts

Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, is a small island in the Pacific Ocean. This little island is famous for some very old and very large statues. These statues, called moai, are hundreds of years old. They are enormous. The largest is 33 feet tall and weighs 80 tons. Even the smallest statue is big-it's 4 feet tall.

About a thousand years ago, people sailed from Polynesia to Rapa Nui. They settled on the island and made the statues from volcanic rock. They made eyes from white coral and used a black or red stone for the pupil. Some statues have headpieces, which could be hair or hats, made from red volcanic rock.

Researchers say the statues probably honor the ancestors of the Polynesian settlers. Rapanui legend says the statues have their ancestors' spirits inside them. There are many different ideas about how the statues came to be standing up.

The statues are located all over the island, usually close to the water. The rock used to make the statues came from miles away from where they stand. How did people move huge, heavy statues hundreds of years ago? Rapanul legend says they walked, and that the spirits of powerful ancestors inside the statues made it happen.

Researchers have different ideas about how the statues moved. Some think that people rolled the statues using cut wood. Other researchers think that people pulled and rolled the statues onto their rounded front sides. In fact, research teams have tried to recreate moving artificial statues to test their ideas. They were able to move the statues, but they were exhausted from the hard work.

Susan:Hello everyone! May I introduce to you a special guest, Mr Johnson, the principal of a famous school in our city.

Mr Johnson:         It’s great to be here. Thanks for having me.

Susan:Thank you for joining us. First, I’d like to congratulate you and your school on being the best one for over the five consecutive years since you have run the school about seven years ago as I remember. My first question is what makes your school a great achievement.

Mr Johnson:         Thank you very much. In fact, the first factor is our teachers and students’ great effort. And then it is our good facilities. But the most vital factor I think is that we have an excellent and flexible curriculum as well as amazing extra activities.

Susan:I absolutely agree with you. Some people suppose schools should only pay attention to academic subjects rather than other ones because it is quite a waste of time to force students to study artistic subjects like art and music. What do you think about it?

Mr Johnson:         Honestly, I strongly disagree with this view. Besides some compulsory subjects, we always encourage students to get to know and practice some other subjects and skills. Our school also pays attention to teaching students to play musical instruments because I highly appreciate its advantages and contribution to the development of teenagers. Students don’t need to play them like an extraordinary musician. They just learn to play to improve their brain function. It’s kind of a physical exercise for the brain, you know. It’s very beneficial for their mental health, which helps them improve academic performance…

My city has been changing since the municipal authority had a plan to renovate the canal systems. Many ramshackle shacks were built to be shelters of the impoverished working families migrating to this city to earn their living. Household wastes were directly dumped into the canal, resulting in the very contaminated environment. It was said that the very unpleasant smell releasing from the canal was unable to be eliminated, and the living condition there would not be better. However, thanks to the advanced technology and methods as well as the city authority’s effort, everything has been changing. There is no longer the disgusting smell or shabby houses along both sides of the canal. Instead, the road running parallel to the canal is now full of shade of greenery and the water now is so clean that it is a friendly habitat for a variety of fish. The residents now can walk or do morning exercise on the sidewalks along the banks to enjoy the fresh atmosphere. Former inhabitants are also relocated in new apartments with much better living conditions than before. The canal creates not only a beautiful urban landscape, but also brings a lot of economic benefits to local dwellers. Because of its reformation, the city is changing fast too.

Ann:Hello, Linh. What are you doing?

Linh: Well, I’m filling out the volunteer application form. This year, our school will organize a 3-week community service campaign to help poor children, in which the volunteers can teach English language as tutors. If you cannot arrange time to take part in, you can donate any kinds of materials like money, books, clothes, or even toys that are still in good use.

Ann:That’s interesting! And where are the volunteers going to do those activities?

Linh: Well, the trip is going to last 3 weeks, and we are visiting a mountainous commute located in northern Viet Nam. It’s a remote area very far from the town, where the local young learners find it hard to go to a language center to learn English. We are going to bring knowledge to the children. Besides, this is also a good chance for us to learn some social skills and learn to work effectively in a team.

Ann:I can’t agree more. I think we can learn more about daily life, culture, and cuisine of the people living there too. It’s a pity that I cannot join these activities. However, I can send these children some lovely hand puppets and some of my books.

Linh: That would be great, Ann. After coming back, each member will write a reflection paper so that the organizers will be able to do better in the next campaign. I’ll share it with you.

Ann:Thanks a lot Linh! It’s so nice of you!
