In March 2008, she did a short tour in America and soon her international career began. In 2011, her second album, "21", came out. The music on this album was different from the soul music of "19". It was influenced by American country music, which Adele was listening to during her tour.

Susan: Hello everyone! May I introduce to you a special guest, Mr Johnson, the principal of a famous school in our city.
Mr Johnson: It’s great to be here. Thanks for having me.
Susan: Thank you for joining us. First, I’d like to congratulate you and your school on being the best one for over the five consecutive years since you have run the school about seven years ago as I remember. My first question is what makes your school a great achievement.
Mr Johnson: Thank you very much. In fact, the first factor is our teachers and students’ great effort. And then it is our good facilities. But the most vital factor I think is that we have an excellent and flexible curriculum as well as amazing extra activities.
Susan: I absolutely agree with you. Some people suppose schools should only pay attention to academic subjects rather than other ones because it is quite a waste of time to force students to study artistic subjects like art and music. What do you think about it?
Mr Johnson: Honestly, I strongly disagree with this view. Besides some compulsory subjects, we always encourage students to get to know and practice some other subjects and skills. Our school also pays attention to teaching students to play musical instruments because I highly appreciate its advantages and contribution to the development of teenagers. Students don’t need to play them like an extraordinary musician. They just learn to play to improve their brain function. It’s kind of a physical exercise for the brain, you know. It’s very beneficial for their mental health, which helps them improve academic performance…

Vaccine is one of the greatest inventions in human history. Thanks to it, millions of lives have been saved. One of the first vaccines, released in 1798, was the smallpox vaccine made by Edward Jenner. After that, Louis Pasteur developed many kinds of vaccines with new approaches, and he successfully created cholera and anthrax vaccines. However, not all diseases can be prevented with vaccines like common diseases in tropical countries: dengue fever, hooves, hand, foot and mouth disease, etc. One of the best ways to keep our bodies from illness, therefore, is to have a healthy and active lifestyle before we search for a treatment. It is hoped that with the current advancement of the medical field, many vaccines will be completely developed to save more lives, especially for children and vulnerable people in society.

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to apply for a volunteer tutor in Math and Vietnamese for autistic children at Golden Hearts Centre. I read the information about the position on your centre’s official website last night.
I’m enthusiastic about being part of your charitable classes, aiming at helping autistic children integrate into our community. I’m helpful and hard-working. I had some practical experience of teaching these two subjects to a couple of street children in my neighbourhood. Currently, all my weekend mornings are free, which fits your time requirement.
I’m willing to have an interview on any weekday after 3 p.m. or on weekends. If my application is approved, I can start to work immediately.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Doing some forms of voluntary work has never been more popular with British people. Over 20 million people were engaged in voluntary activities in 2013. Volunteering means giving up time to do work of benefit to the community. It can take many forms, from working with children with learning difficulties, or in an animal hospital, or planting trees. When London won its bid to host the 2012 Olympics, up to 70,000 volunteers were needed to help ensure that the games were a success.
Volunteers can be anyone of any age. Students and full-time workers often manage to involve in some voluntary work. But what motivates volunteers? Some do it for a sense of selflessness while others find they have free time available. Many mention the opportunity to get to know people they would not normally meet.
A relatively new phenomenon is the hope of meeting new friends or even a life partner through volunteering. In a recent British survey, 20% of 18-24 year-olds and 8% of over-65s said their love lives had improved since they began volunteering. The same poll found that nearly half of volunteers enjoyed improved health and fitness, a quarter lost weight - especially those working with children or doing conservation projects - and two-thirds felt less stressed. So, it seems volunteering may improve your life, and you may even find the person of your dreams.

B. They have spare time.
C. They usually meet people.
D. They want new friends.

Our next speaker really needs no introduction. She has been involved in local politics for longer than I've been alive, and over the past four decades has become an icon of our city and community. She started by serving eight years on the city council, and then eight years as mayor. After that, she was elected for two terms as our state governor, then two more terms as state representative. As if that weren't enough, she has been president of her children's Parent-Teacher Association three separate times, and now is the volunteer president of our local chapter of Citizens for a Greener America. She has a PhD in public policy from State University, where she serves on the advisory board, and last month received an honorary degree from Harvard. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in giving a warm welcome/ to a very special guest: Ms. Lindsey Larson!

Time: People know you as a sort of social worker. Do they understand the spiritual basis of your work?
Mother Teresa: I don't know. But I give them a chance to come and touch the poor. Everybody has to experience that. So many young people give up everything to do just that. This is something so completely unbelievable in the world, no? And yet it is wonderful. Our volunteers go back different people.
Time: Does the fact that you are a woman make your message more understandable? Mother Teresa: I never think like that.
Time: But don't you think the world responds better to a mother?
Mother Teresa: People are responding not because of me, but because of what we're doing. Before, people were speaking much about the poor, but now more and more people are speaking to the poor. That's the great difference. The work has created this. The presence of the poor is known now, especially the poorest of the poor, the unwanted, the loved, the uncared-for. Before, nobody bothered about the people in the street. We have picked up from the streets of Calcutta 54,000 people, and 23,000 something have died in that one room at Kalighat.
Time: Why have you been so successful......

II. READING
TASK 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B, or C to each of the questions.
Global warming is said to be a culprit of many destructive natural damages. Many research shows that glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland are melting quickly, which has a detrimental influence on ocean currents. Cold lands are habitats of various polar mammals; therefore, ice melting means that their homeland is shrinking in size, and they will be on the brink of extinction. Furthermore, scientists point out that the global rising temperature results in the death of many coral reefs in many regions and the disappearance of various kinds of fish. It is not to mention the fact that human life has also been threatened. Most meteorologists and marine experts agree that the change of average heat worldwide links to the extensive storms and hurricanes, and other naturally severe disasters happening around the planet. Recently, a devastating tornado has badly torn a coastal state in the USA, killing at least 70 people and destroying a lot of houses and infrastructure. The town mayor said that he had never seen such a violently tremendous natural phenomenon before. Many European countries have also witnessed the rage of Mother Nature when they have been hit by ferocious storms taking months to recover the local people’s normal life. No one will know exactly the future, but the worst scenario of the earth can be predictable for sure if humans continue treating the environment as they are doing. Global warming is an emergency issue that should be resolved immediately.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Disastrous results of global warming.
B.How bad humans are treating the earth.
C.The deadly storms and tornadoes occurred in many countries.
D.The reason why glaciers are melting.
2. What does the word ‘they’ in line 5 mean?
A.Glaciers
B.Cold lands
C. The polar mammals
D.The habitats of the polar mammals
3. According to the text, what natural disaster has happened?
A.A hurricane in the USA
B.Storms of different types in some European countries and the USA
C.Some droughts and hurricanes in the USA and European countries
D.A flood and a storm in the USA and European countries
4. According to the text, where has suffered badly in a destructive tornado lately?
A.A mountainous area in a European country
B.A coastal state in Canada
C.A central state in the USA
D.A seaside state in the USA
5. Without timely actions, the worst future of humans’ life can be ________.
A.solved immediately

Minh: Hello Daisy, how are you preparing for the oral test next Thursday? I don’t have many ideas about how to reduce our negative impact on the surrounding environment…
Daisy:Well. There are a wide range of ways we can do to protect our environment. You can search the information on the Internet, newspapers or YouTube channels.
Minh: Oh, thank you very much. In fact, I was absent from my last class because of my illness. It took some time to recover, so I couldn’t catch all the lessons last week.
Daisy:So sorry to hear that. It’s just Saturday, you still have four days. Plus, it’s not very difficult. According to the lessons, one way we can do is to avoid using products with plastic packages as much as possible because we all know that plastic items need a very long time to be gotten rid of – hundreds of years although some people think it’s just several years.
Minh: Wow, it’s unbelievable. So how about other ways?
Daisy:If you find it hard to demonstrate the idea, another choice is to talk about minimizing air pollution by using public transportation instead of private cars and motorbikes.
Minh: Sounds interesting. But I think it would be easier for me to have a look at how we can decrease the amount of plastic bags we consume every day. I can utilize my family’s real experience as an example. I think my teacher will appreciate that. I’ll use your suggestions for the writing test, which is four weeks from now, as I need more time to collect the information about it.

Good morning, everyone. As you may know, recycling materials is seen as one way to reduce the amount of garbage dumped into the environment. Today, I will show you another solution which is very useful, and easily done by yourselves. It’s “salvaging materials”. Let me give you more explanations. Normally, we use more energy to recycle something to turn it into new products. For example, to recycle metal, we have to melt it down and then make it into new shapes, which means we need lots of fuels or energy. However, with the salvaging method, we can reuse materials with fewer energy resources and minimise the damaging impact on our environment. For instance, we can reuse the old car tires as new swings for children, or we even turn old buses into new comfortable and eco-friendly homes by modifying them and adding more decorations made from recycled car parts inside and outside. Simple, isn’t it? Can anyone give me some other examples? ...

5. Liam has watched a documentary about the drawbacks of deforestation so far.
TASK 2
Sample writing:
Nowadays, an increasing number of endangered animals have been on the verge of extinction, so we should take serious measures against major threats to these species. First, the government should impose a total ban on illegal hunting and trading in valuable wild animal parts, and heighten public awareness of stopping purchasing wild animal products. Second, deforestation for farming and building industrial parks is attributed to the widespread loss of natural habitats of many wild animals. Therefore, we should stop cutting down forests and set up more nature reserves and conservation parks to better protect these animals on the red list. Finally, we can join the ecotours in which a part of money is donated to wildlife organisations to help preserve endangered species from mass disappearance. To summarise, with the above practical protection measures, we can hope that current wild animals in danger will never die out.
