A. Đại từ sở hữu trong tiếng Anh

Bạn xét ví dụ sau:

a friend of John's: một người bạn của John.

Đây là dạng sở hữu cách. Nếu bạn chưa biết, bạn có thể tìm hiểu thêm ở chương: Sở hữu cách trong tiếng Anh.

Giả sử bạn muốn nói một người bạn của tôi, bạn không thể viết a friend of my, mà phải dùng một đại từ sở hữu (possessive pronoun).

Tính từ sở hữu (possessive adjective) phải dùng với một danh từ. Ngược lại đại từ sở hữu (possessive pronouns) có thể dùng một mình. Sau đây là bảng so sánh về ngôi, số của hai loại này:

- This is my book. - This is your book. - This is his book. - This is her book. - This is our book. - This is their book.	- This book is mine. - This book is yours. - This book is his. - This book is hers. - This book is ours. - This book is theirs.

Ngoài ra, chúng ta cũng có đại từ sở hữu its tương ứng với tính từ sở hữu its. Tuy nhiên đã nhiều năm người ta không thấy loại đại từ này được sử dụng trong thực tế. Vì thế nhiều tác giả đã loại trừ its ra khỏi danh sách các đại từ sở hữu.

B. Cách sử dụng Đại từ sở hữu trong tiếng Anh

Đại từ sở hữu (possessive pronouns) được dùng trong những trường hợp sau:

* Dùng thay cho một tính từ sở hữu (possessive adjective) và một danh từ đã nói phía trước.

- I gave it to my friends and to yours. (= your friends)

(Tôi đưa nó cho các bạn của tôi và của bạn.)

- Her shirt is white, and mine is blue. (= my shirt)

(Áo cô ta màu trắng còn của tôi màu xanh.)

* Dùng trong dạng câu sở hữu kép (double possessive).

- He is a friend of mine.

(Anh ta là một người bạn của tôi.)

- It was no fault of yours that we mistook the way.

(Chúng tôi lầm đường đâu có phải là lỗi của anh.)

* Dùng ở cuối các lá thư như một quy ước. Trường hợp này người ta chỉ dùng ngôi thứ hai.

Task 1. Viết lại câu dùng đại từ sở hữu.

Ví dụ: This is Harry. He’s one of my classmates.

Task 2. Chọn tính từ sở hữu hoặc đại từ sở hữu thích hợp.
