Ngữ pháp must, mustn't và needn't

1. Cách sử dụng Must và Mustn't

You must do something = bạn cần phải làm gì

Ví dụ:

• You must keep the contract a secret.

Bạn phải giữ bí mật về hợp đồng này.

• There isn’t enough time for us to have a substantial meal. We must hurry up.

Chúng tôi không có đủ thời gian để ăn một bữa no nê. Chúng tôi phải nhanh chân lên.

• I can’t carry the luggage by myself. My husband must help me.

Tôi không thể tự mang hành lý. Chồng tôi phải giúp tôi.

You mustn’t do something = bạn không cần phải làm một điều gì

Ví dụ:

• You mustn’t tell anyone about the contract, even your family.

Bạn không được nói cho ai về hợp đồng, kể cả gia đình bạn.

• We mustn’t make any noise in order to not wake the baby up.

Chúng tôi không được làm ồn để không đánh thức em bé.

2. Cách sử dụng Needn't

You needn’t do something = bạn không cần phải làm gì

Ví dụ:

• You can come to the party but in fact if you are busy, you needn’t attend it.

Bạn có thể tới bữa tiệc nhưng nếu bạn bận, bạn không cần tới.

• They are having a day off. They needn’t get up early in the morning.

Họ đang có một ngày nghỉ. Họ không cần dậy sớm vào buổi sáng.

• I can understand everything the lecturer said in the class. You needn’t explain it to me.

Tôi có thể hiểu được mọi thứ giảng viên nói trong lớp. Bạn không cần giải thích với tôi.

Needn’t có thể được thay thế bằng do not need to do something.

Ví dụ:

• We needn’t wake up early in the morning.

= we don’t need to wake up early in the morning.

Chúng tôi không cần dậy sớm vào buổi sáng.

• We have lots of foods in the refrigerator so we don’t need to go to the grocery store to buy some.

= We have lots of foods in the refrigerator so we needn’t go to the grocery store to buy some.

Chúng tôi có rất nhiều đồ ăn trong tủ lạnh nên chúng tôi không cần phải tới cửa hàng tạp hoá để mua thêm.

Ghi nhớ: needn’t + do trong khi don’t need + to do và do not need to do cũng có ý nghĩa tương tự như don’t have to do something.

Ví dụ:

• We don’t have to go to school on Independence Day.

= we needn’t go to school on Independence Day.

= we don’t need to go to school on Independence Day.

Chúng tôi không phải đi học vào ngày Quốc Khánh.

• It didn’t rain so we don’t need to bring a raincoat with us.

= It didn’t rain so we needn’t bring a raincoat with us.

= It didn’t rain so we don’t have to bring a raincoat with us.

Trời không mưa nên chúng tôi không cần mang áo mưa.
