Ngữ pháp giới từ On, In, At (cách sử dụng khác)

A. Giới từ với nơi làm việc, nhà, trường, ...

  • Ta nói ai đó là in bed (trên giường), in the hospital (trong bệnh viện), in prison (trong tù):

    - Mark isn't up yet. He's still in bed.

    (Mark vẫn chưa dậy. Anh ấy vẫn nằm trên giường.)

    - Kay's mother is in hospital.

    (Mẹ của Kay đang ở trong bệnh viện.)

  • Hoặc chúng ta nói ai đó là at home / at work / at school / at uiversity / at college:

    - I'll be at work until 5.30 but I'll be at home all evening.

    Tôi làm việc tới 5h30 nhưng tôi sẽ ở nhà vào buổi tối.

    - Julia is studying chemistry at university.

    (Julia hiện đang theo học ngành hóa ở trường đại học.)

  • Ta cũng nói at sea (= du hành bằng đường biển). So sánh at sea với in the sea:

    - It was a long voyage. We were at sea for 30 days.

    (Đó là một chuyến đi dài ngày. Chúng tôi đã ở trên bãi biển 30 ngày.)

    - I love swimming in the sea.

    (Tôi thích bơi ở biển.)

B. Giới từ với sự kiện

Chúng ta sử dụng giới từ at khi nói rằng ai đó đang tham gia hay đang ở trong một sự kiện, một tình huống nào đó (at a party / at a conference ...):

Ví dụ:

- Were there many people at the party / at the meeting?

(Có đông người đã tham dự buổi liên hoan / cuộc họp không?)

- I saw Jack at a football match / at a concert last Saturday.

(Tôi gặp Jack ở trận bóng đá / buổi hòa nhạc hôm thứ bảy tuần trước.)

C. Giới từ in và at với các tòa nhà

Bạn có thể sử dụng giới từ in và at với các tòa nhà. Chẳng hạn, có thể nói in a restaurant hay at a restaurant.

Ta thường dùng at khi ám chỉ tới các sự kiện hơn là bản thân vị trí hay nơi sự kiện xảy ra (như a concert — buổi hòa nhạc / a film — buổi chiếu phim/ a party — buổi liên hoan / a meeting — cuộc mít tinh / a sports event — một sự kiện thể thao):

Ví dụ:

- We went to a concert at the Royal Festival Hall.

(Chúng tôi đã tới dự buổi hòa nhạc tại Cung Hoàng gia.)

- The meeting took place at the company's headquarters.

(Cuộc họp đã diễn ra tại phòng lãnh đạo công ty.)

- The film I want to see is showing at the Odeon (cinema).

(Bộ phim tôi muốn xem đang chiếu ở rạp Odeon.)

Chúng ta nói at the station / at the airport:

- Don't meet me at the station. I can get a taxi.

(Đừng đón tôi ở ga. Tôi có thể đi taxi.)

Chúng ta sử dụng giới từ at khi nói tới nhà một ai đó:

- I was at Judy's house last night. hoặc I was at Judy's last night.

(Tôi ở nhà Judy tối qua.)

Tương tự với at the doctor's, at the hairdresser's, ...

Chúng ta sử dụng giới từ in khi đề cập tới chính bản thân nơi chốn, vị trí (công trình xây dựng, kiến trúc...):

- The rooms in Judy's house are very small. (không nói 'at Judy's house')

(Các căn phòng ở nhà Judy rất nhỏ.)

- I enjoyed the film but it was very cold in the cinema. (không nói 'at the cinema')

(Tôi thích cuốn phim nhưng trong rạp lạnh quá.)

D. Giới từ in với thành phố, làng mạc, ...

Đối với các thành phố, làng mạc hay các thị trấn, ta thường dùng giới từ in.

Ví dụ:

- Tom's parents live in Nottingham. (không nói 'at Nottingham')

(Cha mẹ Tom sống ở Nottingham.)

- The Louvre is a famous art museum in Paris. (không nói 'at Paris')

(Louvre là một bảo tàng nghệ thuật nổi tiếng ở Paris.)

Nhưng bạn có thể dùng giới từ at hoặc in khi mà nơi chốn bạn nói tới đó có nghĩa như một điểm hoặc một trạm của một chuyến đi.

Ví dụ:

- Do you know if this train stops at (hoặc in) Nottingham? (= at Nottingham station)

(Bạn có biết lệu chuyến tàu này có dừng ở Nottingham hay không?)

- We stopped at (hoặc in) a small village on the way to London.

(Chúng tôi đã dừng ở một làng nhỏ trên đường tới London.)

E. Giới từ với chỉ vị trí trên các phương tiện vận tải
