Ngữ pháp Tính từ + to V

A. Cách sử dụng difficult to understand... trong tiếng Anh

Bạn so sánh các ví dụ (a) và (b) sau:

- Jim doesn't speak very clearly.

(Jim nói không rõ ràng lắm.)

(a) It is difficult to understand him.

(Khó mà hiểu được anh ấy.)

(b) He is difficult to understand.

(Anh ấy thật khó hiểu.)

Hai ví dụ (a) và (b) có cùng một nghĩa. Nhưng lưu ý rằng chúng ta nói:

He is difficult to understand. (KHÔNG nói 'He is difficult to understand him')

Bạn có thể sử dụng cùng cấu trúc tính từ + to V trên với các tính từ sau:

difficult	easy	hard	impossible
dangerous	safe	expensive	cheap
nice	good	interesting	exciting

Ví dụ:

- Do you think it is safe to drink this water?

Do you think this water is safe to drink? (KHÔNG nói 'to drink it')

Bạn có nghĩ rằng uống nước này là an toàn không?

- Your writing is awful. It is impossible to read it. (=to read your writing)

Your writing is impossible to read.

(Chữ viết của anh thật khó đọc.)

- I like being with Jill. It's very interesting to talk to her.

(Tôi thích ở bên Jill. Thật thú vị khi nói chuyện với cô ấy.)

-Jill is very interesting to talk to. (KHÔNG nói 'to talk to her')

(Thật thú vị khi nói chuyện với Jill.)

Bạn cũng có thể sử dụng cấu trúc tính từ + danh từ.

Ví dụ:

- This is difficult question (for me) to answer. (KHÔNG nói 'to answer it')

(Đây là câu hỏi khó trả lời (đối với tôi)).

B. Cấu trúc it's nice (of you) to ... trong tiếng Anh

Bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc này để nói bạn nghĩ gì về việc mà ai đó đã làm.

Ví dụ:

- It was nice of you to take me to the station. Thank you very much.

(Bạn thật tử tế khi đưa tôi đến nhà ga. Cảm ơn bạn.)

Nhiều tính từ cũng được sử dụng theo cách này, ví dụ:

kind	clever	sensible
mean	silly	stupid
careless	unfair	considerate

Ví dụ:

- It's silly of Mary to give up her job when she needs the money.

(Mary thật dại dột khi bỏ việc làm lúc mà cô ấy cần tiền.)

- I think it was very unfair of him to criticise me.

(Tôi nghĩ ông ta thật bất công khi phê bình tôi.)

C. Cấu trúc I'm sorry to... trong tiếng Anh

Bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc tính từ + to để nói về cách người nào đó phản ứng lại điều gì đó.

Ví dụ:

- I was sorry to hear that your father is ill.

(Tôi lấy làm tiếc khi nghe tin cha của anh bị ốm.)

Nhiều tính từ khác cũng được sử dụng theo cách này, ví dụ:

happy	glad	pleased	delighted	sad
disappointed	surprised	amazed	astonished	relieved

Ví dụ:

- Was Tom surprised to see you when you went to see him?

Tom ngạc nhiên thấy bạn khi bạn đến thăm anh ấy không?

- We were delighted to get your letter last week.

(Chúng tôi đã vui sướng khi nhận được lá thư của anh tuần trước.)

C. Cấu trú The first (person) to know, The next train to arrive ...

Chúng ta sử dụng giới từ to sau các cụm từ the first/second/third/... hoặc sau the next, the last, the only.

Ví dụ:

- If I have any more news, you will be the first (person) to know.

(Nếu tôi có tin gì mới, anh sẽ là người đầu tiên được biết.)

- The next train to arrive at platfom 4 will be the 6.50 to Cardiff.

(Chuyến tàu tiếp theo tới ở đường ray số 4 sẽ đi Cardiff vào lúc 6h50.)

- Everybody was late except me. I was the only one to arrive on time.

(Mọi người đều bị trễ trừ tôi. Tôi là người duy nhất tới đúng giờ.)

E. Các tính từ sure/certain/bound/likely trong tiếng Anh

Bạn có thể nói rằng một việc nào đó là sure/certain/bound/likely xảy ra:

Ví dụ:

- She's very intelligent. She's sure/certain/bound to pass the exam.

(Cô ấy rất thông minh. Cô ấy chắc chắn/đương nhiên/nhất định thi đậu.)

- I'm likely to be late home this evening. (=I will probably be late home)

(Tối này có thể tôi về nhà muộn.)
