Ngữ pháp Thành ngữ + Ving

A. Một số Thành ngữ + V-ing trong tiếng Anh

Khi những thành ngữ dưới đây được theo sau bởi một động từ, thì động từ đó phải tận cùng bằng -ing.

• It's no use .../ It's no good ...

  - There's nothing you can do about the situation, so it's no use worrying about it.

  (Bạn chẳng thể làm gì trong tính thế này, thật là vô ích khi lo lắng về chuyện đó.)

  - It's no good trying to persuade me. You won't succeed.

  (Có thuyết phục tôi cũng chẳng ích gì. Bạn sẽ không thành công đâu.)

• There's no point in...

  - There's no point in having a car if you never use it.

  (Nếu bạn không bao giờ dùng đến thì mua một chiếc xe có ích lợi gì đâu.)

  - There was no point in waiting any longer, so we went.

  (Có chờ đợi thêm cũng chẳng ích gì nên chúng ta bỏ đi.)

• It's (not) worth...

  - I live only a short walk from here, so it's not worth taking a taxi.

  (Tôi chỉ ở cách đây mấy bước thôi, chẳng đáng phải đi taxi.)

  - It was so late when we got home, it wasn't worth going to bed.

  (Khi chúng tôi về nhà thì đã khuya lắm rồi, nên chẳng cần ngủ nữa.)

  Bạn cũng có thể nói "a film is worth seeing" (một cuốn phim đáng xem), ""a book is worth reading" (một cuốn sách đáng đọc), như ví dụ sau:

  - What was a film like? Was it worth seeing?

  (Cuốn phim đã như thế nào? Nó có đáng xem không?)

  - I don't think newspapers are worth reading.

  (Tôi không nghĩ rằng báo chí đáng để đọc.)

B. Cấu trúc (have) difficulty + V-ing trong tiếng Anh

Bạn sử dụng cấu trúc have difficulty doing something (không phải "to do") để diễn tả rằng ai đó gặp khó khăn trong khi làm việc gì đó.

Ví dụ:

- I have difficulty finding a place to live.

(KHÔNG nói "I had difficulty to find")

(Tôi đã gặp khó khăn khi tìm một chỗ để ở.)

- Did you have any difficulty getting a visa?

(Bạn xin thị thực có khó khăn gì không?)

- People often have great difficulty reading my writing.

(Mọi người thường khó khăn khi đọc chữ viết của tôi.)

Bạn cần chú rằng, chúng ta nói have difficulty chứ không nói have difficulties.

Ví dụ:

- I'm sure you'll have no difficulty passing the exam.

(KHÔNG nói 'have difficulties')

(Tôi tin chắc bạn sẽ thi đậu chẳng mấy khó khăn gì.)

C. Chúng ta sử dụng V-ing sau:

• a waste of money.../a waste of time... (sử dụng to cũng được): lãng phí thời gian/tiền bạc

  - It was a waste of time reading that book. It was rubbish.

  (Đọc cuốn sách đó thật phí thì giờ. Nó chỉ là đồ nhảm nhí.)

  - It's a waste of money buying things you don't need.

  (Mua sắm những thứ bạn không cần thiết thì thật là phí tiền.)

• spend/waste (time)...: dành/phí (thời gian)

  - He spent hours trying to repair the clock.

  (Anh ta đã bỏ ra hằng mấy giờ liền để sửa chữa cái đồng hồ đó.)

  - I waste a lot of time daydreaming.

  (Tôi đã phí nhiều thời gian vào việc mơ mộng.)

• (be) busy...: bận rộn

  - She said she couldn't see me. She was too busy doing other things.

  (Cô ấy đã nói cô ấy không thể gặp tôi. Cô ấy quá bận để làm việc khác.)

D. Go swimming/go fishing ... trong tiếng Anh

Chúng ta sử dụng go + V-ing với nhiều hành động (đặc biệt là trong thể thao). Chẳng hạn, bạn có thể nói:

go swimming go sailing

go skiing go jogging ...

và tương tự: go shopping/go sightseeing

Ví dụ:

- I'd like to go skiing.

(Tôi thích trượt tuyết.)

- When did you last go shopping?

(Bạn đi mua sắm lần cuối cùng khi nào?)

- I've never been sailing.

(Tôi chưa bơi thuyền bao giờ.)

Bạn cũng có thể nói "come swimming/come skiing"/ ...

Ví dụ:

- Why don't you come swimming with us?

(Sao bạn không đi bơi với chúng tôi?)
