Ngữ pháp phân biệt On time và In time, At the end và In the end

A. Phân biệt on time và in time trong tiếng Anh

on time = "đúng giờ, không chậm trễ". Chúng ta sử dụng on time để nói rằng một việc nào đó xảy ra đúng thời gian như đã được dự tính:

Ví dụ:

- The 11.45 train left on time. (= in left at 11.45)

(Chuyến tàu 11h45 đã khởi hành đúng giờ. (= nó rời nhà ga lúc 11h45))

- "I'll meet you at 7.30." "OK, but please be on time."

(= don't be late, be there at 7.30)

("Tôi sẽ gặp anh lúc 7h30." "Hay lắm, nhưng nhớ đúng giờ nhé." )

(= đừng tới muộn, hãy có mặt ở đó lúc 7h30)

- The conference was very well organised. Everything began and finished on time.

Hội nghị đã được tổ chức rất tốt. Mọi việc đều bắt đầu và kết thúc đúng thời gian đã định.

Trái nghĩa với on time là late:

- Be on time. Don't be late.

(Hãy đúng giờ. Đừng có trễ.)

in time (for something / to do something) = "vừa đúng lúc" ( làm gì đó)

Ví dụ:

- Will you be home in time for dinner? (= soon enough for dinner)

(Bạn sẽ về đến nhà kịp bữa tối chứ? (= vừa kịp bữa tối))

- I've sent Jill her birthday present. I hope it arrives in time (for her birthday).

(= soon enough for her birthday)

(Tôi đã gửi quà sinh nhật cho Jill. Tôi hy vọng món quà tới kịp (sinh nhật cô ấy). )

(= vừa kịp sinh nhật cô ấy)

- I must hurry. I want to get home in time to see the football match on television.

(= soon enough to see the football match)

(Tôi phải khẩn trương. Tôi muốn về nhà đúng lúc để xem trận bóng đá trên tivi. )

(= đủ để xem trận đấu bóng đá trên tivi)

Trái nghĩa với in time là too late:

- I got home too late to see the football match.

(Tôi về tới nhà quá muộn để kịp xem trận bóng đá.)

Cũng có thể nói just in time (= almost too late — vừa kịp để không quá muộn):

- We got to the station just in time to catch the train.

(Chúng tôi tới ga vừa vặn kịp chuyến tàu.)

- A child ran across the road in front of the car, but I managed to stop just in time.

(Một đứa bé chạy qua đường ngay trước đầu xe, nhưng tôi đã kịp hãm xe lại vừa đúng lúc.)

B. Phân biệt at the end và in the end trong tiếng Anh

At the end (of something) = thời điểm kết thúc (một việc, sự kiện, thời gian...). Chẳng hạn như:

at the end of the month

at the end of January

at the end of the match

at the end of the film

at the end of the course

at the of the concert

Ví dụ:

- I'm going away at the end of January / at the end of the month.

(Tôi sẽ đi vắng vào cuối tháng giêng / vào cuối tháng.)

- At the end of the concert, there was great applause.

(Kết thúc buổi hòa nhạc là một tràng vỗ tay thật lớn.)

- All the players shook hands at the end of the match.

(Tất cả các cầu thủ đã bắt tay vào lúc cuối trận đấu.)

Bạn không thể nói in the end of something. Do vậy, bạn không thể nói in the end of January hay in the end of the concert.

Trái nghĩa với at the end (of...) là at the beginning (of...):

at the beginning of January (đầu tháng giêng) at the beginning of the concert (đầu buổi hòa nhạc)

in the end = cuối cùng , sau cùng...

Chúng ta sử dụng in the end khi nói tới kết quả sau cùng của một tình huống, một sự việc...:

Ví dụ:

- We had a lot of problems with our car. In the end we sold it and bought another one.

(= finally we sold it.)

(Chúng tôi đã gặp nhiều phiền toái với chiếc xe. Cuối cùng chúng tôi đã bán nó đi và mua chiếc khác.)

- He got more and more angry. In the end he just walked out of the room.

(Anh ta ngày càng bực tức. Cuối cùng anh ta đã bước ra khỏi phòng.)

- Jim couldn't decide where to go for his holidays. He didn't go anywhere in the end.

(Jim đã không thể quyết định sẽ đi đâu trong những ngày nghỉ. Cuối cùng anh ta đã chẳng đi đâu cả.)

Trái nghĩa với in the end là at first:

- At first we didn't like each other very much, but in the end we became good friends.

(Lúc đầu chúng tôi không hợp nhau lắm, nhưng sau đó chúng tôi đã trở thành những người bạn tốt.)
